How Chargers Greg Roman Schemes his Offense to Different Quarterbacks

Justin Herbert will be working with his fourth offensive coordinator in 2024 since coming into the NFL. This time, Herbert will get to work under Greg Roman.

Roman himself has worked with a bunch of different quarterbacks, including Lamar Jackson and Colin Kaepernick.

Heading into his first season with Herbert, Roman talked about how he schemed his offense to the strengths of the different quarterbacks he's worked with.

"I think that's the key. You're teaching principles and you're working our football system, but at a certain point you start to get a feel of what that quarterback is good at, what he likes. The communication process is very important there. You really start to tailor things for success. The team success comes first before any statistical thing that might come up. If you're playing winning football and you're playing the game a certain way, all these great things are going to happen along the way. But how we play, how hard we play, focus we can dial in, those are the things that are going to allow all those great things to happen."

The big difference in working with Herbert is that he is not a running quarterback like several of the other passers Roman has designed offenses. Though Herbert has some mobility, he runs significantly less than Jackson or Kaepernick. Instead, Herbert likes to throw the ball first.

Roman has teased that there could be some designed runs for Herbert and that he wants to support Herbert with a strong running game. This would of course be a plus for the soon-to-be fifth-year quarterback, but expect this offense to be more pass-heavy than some of Roman's previous ones, especially to adapt to the strengths of Herbert.
