All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton missed Wednesday’s practice with a knee injury. While he has not been ruled out of anything, his potential absence against the Buffalo Bills could put the Ravens’ secondary, which was just torched by the Cincinnati Bengals, in an even worse bind. Hamilton is essential to Baltimore’s defensive system due to his versatility, which allows Jesse Minter to operate with three safeties and three cornerbacks in dime packages while also occasionally utilizing Hamilton as a pass rusher. Without that flexibility, Baltimore may have to change the way it plays.

Should Baltimore Simplify Its Coverage?

While Hamilton can do just about anything as a safety, he is at his best being a box safety that roams around the field and lets his instincts determine his movements. This free role gives Jesse Minter the chance to make a more complicated defense due to how much ground Hamilton can cover.

Per Next Gen Stats, Hamilton is the only defensive back besides Nick Emmanwori to have lined up in the front (15.4%), the second level (33.0%), and the secondary (51.7%) on more than 15% of his snaps this season. The film demonstrates that versatility as well. Against the Tennessee Titans in the second quarter, Hamilton lined up next to Roquan Smith in the box, coordinated the defense, then dropped into coverage and flew across the field to push running back Tyjae Spears out of bounds for a two-yard gain after the Titans attempted a hook-and-lateral with Carnell Tate. Spears bobbled the lateral, but Hamilton was bearing down on him regardless.

Hamilton can also line up on the edge as a pass rusher, as he demonstrated against the Indianapolis Colts. On one play in the first quarter, Hamilton burst forward, getting past right guard Matt Goncalves and running back Jonathan Taylor to pressure Daniel Jones. The quarterback was forced to escape the pocket, where Tavius Robinson met him and brought him down for an eight-yard loss.

Without this sort of versatility against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore could have a much harder time disguising its coverages and pressure packages, potentially making life easier for Allen. The Ravens have other safeties they can put in place to maintain their three-safety system, but none of them (and frankly, very few players in the league) could replicate the impact Hamilton can have on a game.
