How Dexter Lawrence contract negotiations with Giants might shake out

The New York Giants will be without star DT Dexter Lawrence as they begin their offseason program Monday, per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. Lawrence will sit out due to his unresolved contract situation.

The Giants and Lawrence have been negotiating an extension since the 2022 season ended. However, the sides have not reached an agreement, and Lawrence is not keen on risking an injury at voluntary workouts before a ideal is reached.

Lawrence is entering the final year of his rookie deal after the Giants picked up his $12.4 million fifth-year option last offseason. The value of the final year on Lawrence's contract is far below his market price.

Recent contracts negotiated this offseason have reset the defensive tackle market, putting Lawrence in position for a big payday.

Washington Commanders DT Daron Payne signed a four-year, $90 million extension with his team ($22.5M per year). Next was Titans DT Jeffery Simmons, who signed a four-year, $94 million extension with Tennessee ($23.5M per year). Javon Hargrave also hit a big payday on the open market, jumping from Philadelphia to San Fransisco for a four-year, $84 million contract.

Lawrence's deal with the Giants could surpass those of Payne, Simmons and Hargrave.

Lawrence, 25, had a breakout 2022 season, posting career-highs in sacks (7.5), combined tackles (68), QB hits (28) and tackles for loss (7). Lawrence earned his first career selection to the Pro Bowl and a spot as a Second-Team All-Pro per the AP.

The contract the Giants give Lawrence could ultimately be determined by another New York DT. Jets DT Quinnen Williams is also seeking a long-term extension as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. A stalemate could occur as each player waits to see how much the other makes on his next deal before requesting an extension of equal or greater value.

Ultimately, Lawrence could receive a contract worth at least $25 million per season. This would make him the second-highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL behind only future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald. If Lawrence can maintain his level of play from the 2022 season, the price will be well worth it.
