Tom Brady made a huge move when he came out of retirement to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The then-six-time Super Bowl champion announced that he would be retiring from the sport in February 2022, only to retract his statement the following month to announce that he would be playing for the Buccaneers for his 23rd season in the NFL.
Last year, while commentating the Philadelphia Eagles-Buccaneers game for FOX, he shared that there were several factors that led to his decision.
“There was a lot of reasons to choose Tampa and I made abut 18 criteria why,” Brady said at the time. “There was things from the salary, obviously, to the weather, the facilities, to how great the players were.”
Brady also made a big reveal when he shared that he was “seriously considering” joining a different NFC team.
“Chicago was a team, and I never told that story before, they were very stealth in their recruitment,” Brady explained. “I was seriously considering them. But, in the end, it came down to Tampa.”
While why Brady chose the Buccaneers makes sense, a recent story published by The Athletic explains the unique way in which the organization convinced the quarterback to join the team.
After John Spytek shared his amazement of Brady’s talent after studying tapes of former quarterbacks such as Drew Brees, Teddy Bridgewater, and Philip Rivers, he went over to Jason Licht with an idea. However, while Licht respected Brady he couldn’t wrap his head around the thought that Brady would leave New England and become a Buc.
However after a couple of days of thinking Licht and Bruce Arians decided it was worth trying to get Brady on board even if though they felt like they didn’t have a chance. According to the publication, that’s when “Licht, Arians, Spytek, Rob McCartney, who was the director of pro scouting at the time, Mike Biehl, the director of college scouting, and Mike Greenberg, who handled contracts” decided to come up with a plan to make Brady a Buc. At the time, only the six of them knew what they were trying to accomplish and that’s when unknowingly the 1989 film Field of Dreams came into play.
“If you build it,” Spytek said of taking advantage of their roster. “He will come.”
“That’s from a movie,” Licht said, referencing Field of Dreams.
After Spytek said the line, they decided to call the plan “Operation Shoeless Joe” after the Shoeless Joe Jackson character in the film. They also called Brady “Shoeless Joe” whenever the team would talk about
Brady wasn’t the only person in “Operation Shoeless Joe” that had a nickname. Licht earned the title of “Ray Kinsella” who is played by Kevin Costner in the film. Costner’s character was the one that built the baseball field that enticed Shoeless Joe to come forth. While Bucs owner Joel Glazer wasn’t a part of the six that helped come up with the plan he was referred to as the character “Terrance Mann” who was portrayed by James Earl Jones. That character disappeared with Shoeless Joe into the cornfield.
In the end, the operation worked. Brady told the Bucs that he would play for them which would end his time in New England. Spytek told the outlet that he picked up his phone on the way to work and later saw that Brady made the official announcement that he would be a Buccaneer. Later that day, the organization made it official.
Brady would go on to win a Super Bowl — his seventh and the franchise’s second — before he officially left the NFL for good in 2023.

A Minnesota Vikings wide receiver's season is already over. The Minnesota Vikings announced on Tuesday that wide receiver Rondale Moore is being placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a leg injury that he suffered in the team's first preseason game against the Houston Texans this past weekend. It is a devastating blow for Moore who is now being sidelined for an entire season, before it even begins, for the second year in a row. Moore signed a one-year, $2 million contract in free agency with the Vikings this offseason in the hopes he could return from a different injury that cost him the entirety of the 2024 season. Moore was a member of the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 after being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals for backup quarterback Desmond Ridder. This is now two different teams that Moore has been a part of but will never play a game for them due to injuries. Moore was injured while returning a punt. He began his career with the Arizona Cardinals, catching 135 passes for 1,201 yards over three seasons before being traded. He was never going to be counted on to be a key contributor for the Vikings offense this season, especially given the superstars they already have at wide receiver in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, but he still had a chance to be an interesting depth player. Now it is fair to wonder what the rest of his career might even look like. Missing two full seasons due to two different leg injuries is going to be a brutal thing to try to come back from. Missing two seasons for any reason is difficult, but when you add the leg injuries to the equation, it makes the obstacle even steeper.
Pete Alonso is now the New York Mets' all-time home run king. With his opposite-field, two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night, Alonso clubbed the 253rd and 254th home runs of his Mets career, moving him into sole possession of first place on the team's all-time list. He moved two home runs ahead of the previous record-holder, Darryl Strawberry, who hit 252 home runs with the team between the 1983 and 1990 seasons. Here is a look at his record-setting home run. Later in the bottom of the sixth inning, Alonso hit his 254th home run: Along with the all-time Mets home run lead, Alonso is also the Mets' single-season home run leader with 53 home runs during the 2019 season. Strawberry congratulated Alonso on breaking his record: His home runs on Tuesday were his 27th and 28th of the season. It is a big deal for Alonso because there was some doubt this past offseason if he would have a chance to actually set this record. Even though he was close, the uncertainty around his future given his free-agent status created a lot of questions about where he would play. Ultimately, the Mets re-signed him to a two-year, $54 million contract that includes an opt-out clause following the 2025 season. That opt-out will again create some uncertainty about his future, but it is pretty clear Alonso still has a lot of power left in his bat. Whether he returns to the Mets or goes somewhere else, he will remain the franchise's greatest home run hitter for the foreseeable future. He is now on top of the record books for the single season and career.
Jerry Jones is very unique in the way he does business. The longtime Dallas Cowboys owner dragged out contract negotiations for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb for no particular reason. This offseason, he’s doing the same with Micah Parsons. Until Jones gets things settled, Persons — a two-time All-Pro — likely won’t be taking the field. David Mulugheta, Parsons’ agent, loves that his client is fighting for every cent he can obtain from Jones. He’ll have Parsons’ back to the bitter end. It’s what makes him one of the sports industry’s most effective agents. According to Forbes, Mulugheta has $58 million in maximum commissions. That’s the seventh-highest figure among North American agents, and the most for any football agent. Only Joel Segal (No. 14: $51 million) and Drew Rosenhaus (No. 17: $45 million) joined him on Forbes’ top 20 list. Mulugheta’s commissions obviously don’t include what he’ll eventually add from Parsons’ deal. Assuming Parsons’ pact is the next one Mulugheta completes, it will push him past $2 billion in player contracts. At this moment, he has an estimated $1.93 billion in player contracts to his name, courtesy of Jordan Love and Jalen Ramsey, among others. Meanwhile, Parsons did now show up to Dallas’ final practice before their Week 1 preseason game last Thursday. His presence today excited fans, but it came merely in a supportive capacity. He remained on the sidelines with his jersey draped on his shoulders all day. Mulugheta and Parsons seem to be doing everything they can to hammer out a deal. Jones apparently doesn’t want to play ball because he believed he and Parsons agreed to a contract at a dinner earlier this offseason. Mulugheta wasn’t present for the meal, though, so Parsons (rightfully) assumed it wasn’t an official negotiation. This led him to request a trade on the first day of August. As mentioned, Jones has a habit of making things more complicated than they need to be. The end result of this whole shenanigan will probably be Parsons signing a massive extension that makes him the NFL’s highest-paid non-QB the week of the Cowboys’ Week 1 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles. If that’s the case, Jones will have once again dominated TV conversation without real consequence. However, if this tactic is ever going to bite Jones in the butt, it will be with Parsons. The 26-year-old edge rusher, like Jones, doesn’t operate conventionally. Whether he and Mulugheta elect to continue their relationship with Jones will be one of season’s biggest stories if he doesn’t end up signing before games begin.
It has been roughly six months since the Los Angeles Lakers made one of the most stunning blockbuster trades in NBA history, and LeBron James and Anthony Davis appear to still be missing one another. Davis was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in February as part of the deal that sent Luka Doncic to L.A. The 10-time All-Star has since spoken about how he remains close with LeBron, and some strange social media activity on Tuesday seemed to illustrate that. LeBron and Davis both shared the exact same cryptic quote on their Instagram stories on Tuesday. They each posted the quote at around the same time of the day, too. The quote said, “Becoming the best version of yourself comes with a lot of goodbyes.” Fans were left a bit confused. The move looked like one a high school couple might pull after a breakup, but a lot of time has passed since Davis was traded. Some people speculated that LeBron might be sending some sort of message to the Lakers, as there have been rumblings that the 40-year-old is unhappy with his current situation. James and Davis were teammates on the Lakers for five-plus seasons and won an NBA title together. One report claimed LeBron had grown frustrated with Davis prior to the trade, and James had a very enthusiastic response to that. For whatever reason, the two pals felt the need to share the same cryptic quote.
