Even when the New York Jets lose they find a way to hurt themselves in the long run.
New York entered Week 14 with a chance to climb as high as a top-three overall pick with a loss to the Miami Dolphins but still claimed a top-five overall pick.
Well, New York did lose to the Dolphins, but due to their strength of schedule and victory, the Jets fell to the seventh overall pick. ... as there are a notable total of six teams with crummy 3-10 records, New York included. (The Jets are the "second-best 3-10 team. Hooray!)
How did this happen? It's important to remember that strength of schedule is a key tiebreaker for teams vying for the top overall pick. The lower your strength of schedule is, the higher the chance of attaining the top pick. The mindset there is that because you go through an easier road and still lose, you are the worse team.
With the Dolphins and Jaguars (New York's next opponent) each winning on Sunday, they improved the Jets' strength of schedule by just a few points. Those points keep them out of the top five for now.
The good news is that these tiebreakers may not mean anything soon.
There are still four games to go in the NFL regular season. If New Yor were to lose those remaining games, it's a safe bet to assume they can climb to a top-three overall pick in the draft moving forward.
A loss to the Jaguars, for example, would vault New York back into the top five. Additional wins from the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots - two teams who are playing much better as of late - should move the Jets up as well.
Tankathon is on for New York for yet another season. As miserable a feeling as it is, it's time to start looking ahead to their chances of attaining a top overall pick.
