As the Philadelphia Eagles prepare for their NFC Championship showdown against the Washington Commanders, the team is also basking in league-wide recognition with five players and coaches named as finalists for the NFL's most prestigious year-end awards.
Saquon Barkley leads the way with nominations for both Associated Press Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Offensive Player of the Year (OPOY) after a historic debut season in midnight green. Barkley rushed for 2,005 yards, becoming just the ninth player in NFL history to surpass the 2,000-yard mark. His 2,283 yards from scrimmage rank 13th all-time, solidifying him as the centerpiece of Philadelphia's high-powered offense.
Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio, in his first year with the Eagles, is a finalist for AP Assistant Coach of the Year after engineering one of the most remarkable defensive turnarounds in NFL history. Under Fangio, Philadelphia's defense led the league in fewest yards allowed, fewest passing yards allowed, and yards per play, a stark contrast from their bottom-tier rankings in 2023.
Linebacker Zack Baun, who joined Philadelphia on a one-year deal, is a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY). Baun anchored the league’s top defense with 93 solo tackles, 3.5 sacks, and five forced fumbles. His playoff contributions have been equally significant, with an interception in the wild-card win over Green Bay and a pivotal fumble recovery in the divisional round victory against the Rams.
Philadelphia's stellar draft class is also in the spotlight, with rookie cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell both finalists for Defensive Rookie of the Year (DROY). DeJean, a second-round pick out of Iowa, posted 51 combined tackles, three fumble recoveries, and excelled as a kick returner. Mitchell, the Eagles’ first-round pick, recorded 46 combined tackles, 12 passes defended, and a game-sealing interception in the wild-card round.
This recognition underscores the Eagles’ dominance in 2024, both on and off the field. As the team gears up for Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against Washington at Lincoln Financial Field, these award finalists will aim to continue their exceptional seasons and secure Philadelphia's second Super Bowl appearance in three years.
The winners of the AP NFL awards will be revealed during the NFL Honors ceremony on February 6, 2025, just days before Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
