The Green Bay Packers‘ selection of Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft has been heralded as the arrival of game-altering speed at the top of the depth chart at receiver, but, the former Texas standout’s impact may resonate beyond wins and losses.
While the Packers’ offense led the league in explosive plays last season, despite a wildly inconsistent receiving corps, dropping Golden into it might have a significant impact both on Jordan Love’s trajectory as a quarterback and his outlook for the 2025 NFL Season.
Love and the Packers are looking to break through and make a deep postseason run towards a Super Bowl, and the offense may prove to be the driving force.
Adding Golden a year removed from Love passing for 3,389 yards with 25 touchdowns to 11 interceptions, to the quarterback’s arsenal could make a major impact both on Green Bay’s championship aspirations as well as the Packers quarterback’s MVP aspirations.
As Bleacher Report points out, Love is currently (+2500) at DraftKings to win MVP, but Golden could be a missing piece to help lift Love to his first MVP award.
“Is it doable?” Brad Gagnon writes for B/R, of Love’s MVP chances. “The long-awaited addition of a first-round pick at receiver should help as Matthew Golden joins the fray in 2025. After all, only Daniel Jones saw his receivers drop passes more frequently than Love last year. And it’s important to remember this guy has just two full seasons as a starter under his belt.
“There’s plenty of room for Love to grow, and the support could be there now for a quarterback who posted a 105.7 passer rating on deep attempts last year.”
Love’s propensity for pushing the ball deep, combined with Golden, who posted 13 deep receptions last season while finishing with 438 deep yards, might be the missing element to the Packers’ offense making a leap and Love bringing up some MVP hardware this fall.
