Tennessee Titans (2-0) starters will play in the team's preseason finale at the New Orleans Saints (1-1) this coming Sunday. Tennessee will look to extend its exhibition success after a good start to new head coach Brian Callahan's first season.
Titans undrafted rookie kicker Brayden Narveson hit a 46-yard game-winning field goal as time expired to beat the visiting Seattle Seahawks 16-15 last week.
Callahan sat 38 Tennessee players in the win over the Seahawks.
Injuries accounted for some, but every player that could be considered a Week 1 "starter," including rookies JC Latham and T'Vondre Sweat, did not dress out for the game. Callahan and his staff decided that the best approach for the team to be prepared for their season road opener against the Chicago Bears was to get "three-ish" series this weekend in New Orleans.
"My intention as of today—again, that could change as the week unfolds with the injuries and who's available and all that stuff—my intent is to play," Callahan said on Sunday. "Play the starters, play a significant amount of snaps for a preseason game. I'd like to see our starting offense play somewhere in the three-ish series (realm), whatever that might look like.
"Defensively, we have a number of guys that aren't going to play anyway. Obviously Chido (Awuzie) and L'Jarius (Sneed) and Jeffery (Simmons) and Harold (Landry III) won't play, but I'd like to see some of those guys that didn't play last night play a little bit this week."
Quarterback Will Levis led two touchdown drives in the Titans first preseason win over the San Francisco 49ers.
The second-year passer completed four of his five attempts for 35 yards. Levis added two rushes for three yards, including a quarterback sneak touchdown on their first drive to answer San Francisco's opening score. Tennessee hosted Seattle for joint training camp practices prior to their preseason game, which proved a difficult test for Levis and the offense.
"I'd like our starters to play," said Callahan. "I think we need to. I'd like to see a little bit more football because then we'll be off for what amounts to close to two weeks before the opener, so they won't see the field again playing live football and I think that we need to play."
The Titans return to action at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans against the Saints on August 25. Watch/listen to Titans Radio's pregame coverage starting at 9am CT on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville.
