How Odell Beckham Jr.'s career reached a crossroads

WR Odell Beckham Jr. burst onto the NFL scene as one of the most electrifying talents of his generation.

In his first five seasons with the New York Giants, OBJ racked up 5,476 receiving yards and 44 touchdowns, even with an injury-shortened 2017 season where he played just four games. His rookie-year catch against the Dallas Cowboys on "Sunday Night Football" instantly became iconic — a moment etched in the memories of football and pop culture fans alike. Hall of Fame glory seemed within reach.

Nevertheless, former New York Giants GM Dave Gettleman, who finished 19-46 during his tenure from 2018-21, made a move that still sparks debate: trading Beckham to the Cleveland Browns in 2019.

Since then, Beckham’s career has been a roller coaster. Over six seasons, he battled injuries and off-field issues, appearing in just 60 percent of games, including missing the entire 2022 season. During that period, he recorded 2,511 yards and 15 touchdowns while suiting up for the Browns, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins — winning a Super Bowl with the Rams in the 2021 season.

In December 2024, Beckham was released by the Dolphins, the fifth franchise of his 11-year career. Rumors of his retirement recently surfaced, but Beckham pushed back on social media, insisting there’s still more football to be played.

Beckham will likely catch on with a sixth franchise, possibly in a reduced role as a third-down option or fourth receiver. While the peak of NFL stardom that once seemed inevitable is likely out of reach, his legacy as a generational talent remains intact.

Injuries are part of the NFL, but it’s still difficult to see a player whose star once shone so brightly navigate such a dramatic career shift. Beckham’s journey is a reminder of how fleeting greatness can be — even for the most electrifying athletes.
