How rapid chemistry with new WR could elevate Bears QB

Bears quarterback Justin Fields and wide receiver D.J. Moore immediately developed chemistry this offseason and could become the dynamic passing tandem Chicago needs.

"It did come quickly," Fields said of his connection with Moore during a Thursday news conference. "I didn't really expect anything because it's different for each guy, but I feel with D.J., his body language is pretty easy to read. Early on, we communicated on how we want each route ran and stuff like that."

Clearly, the communication is working.

"Their rapport has been the best part of the offense this spring," wrote Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic. "The best play of Wednesday's practice was a deep ball from Fields to Moore. It came down the left sideline with (Jaquan) Johnson in tight coverage during seven-on-seven drills." Fields and Moore making more big plays is imperative since it allows him to improve as a passer, which has prevented him from becoming a bona fide franchise QB.

Fields has only completed 59.7 percent of his passes through his first two seasons, throwing 24 TDs and 21 interceptions. He's also logged a 40.2 QBR, below the league average. Not all the blame falls on Fields, though. In 2022, no Chicago pass-catcher exceeded the 50-reception mark. Also, none had 1,000 receiving yards, and the Bears finished last in passing yards.

To solve the problem, Chicago traded the first overall pick to Carolina to acquire Moore, who has crossed the 1,000-yard mark three times in five seasons. It appears Moore is living up to expectations, helping the 24-year-old QB unlock his potential. Moore elevating Fields could help Chicago win its first NFC North title since 2018.
