How the Chicago Bears young wide receivers are helping keep DJ Moore young and what the impact can be with the three weapons

As the Chicago Bears move into the mandatory minicamp stage of the offseason schedule, excitement continues to build for what this offense is going to look like under head coach Ben Johnson.

The roster is ripe with veteran and young talent ready to mesh together and everyone seems to be falling into their place in terms of what's going to be expected out of this group of weapons.

There's only one ball with plenty of mouths to feed in Chicago. Players are going to have to earn the right to see the ball this season and the players in line for the majority of the opportunities is easily the new wide receiver trio.

Last season, the Bears had three strong options at the position in DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, and then-rookie Rome Odunze. The three combined for 222 receptions, 2,444 yards and 16 touchdowns during a lost season.

In 2025, Moore again looks to be the veteran leader of the group with Odunze looking more polished going into Year 2. The newest addition to the room was second-round selection Luther Burden III, who brings some added juice to the offense.

"Their role, they’re keeping me young even though I’m not that old in the room," Moore said. "Just seeing them follow behind my lead and just grow from there. Rome’s taken a step this year. I can already tell. Then, [Burden], I can’t wait to see what he can do. I’ve seen him in rookie minicamp doing a lot of things."

For really the first time in his career, Moore is the oldest player at the position, despite only being 28-years-old. Having these two players in Odunze and Burden looking up to him has pushed him to lead by example and being detail-oriented.

Throughout the two weeks of organized team activities and the first day of mandatory minicamp, Burden hasn't been able to mesh with his fellow teammates yet while dealing with a lingering soft tissue injury, but that hasn't stopped him from learning.

"Sadly, he’s not out there right now, but I know he’s watching," Moore explained. "He’s been asking a lot of questions, so I’ve just been helping him that way."

In the meantime, it's been Moore, Odunze, Olamide Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay mixing in at the position learning the offense. With all those weapons, and an innovative play-caller in Johnson, the sky is the limit for what can be dialed up.

"You'll have to wait until the season to see," Moore said with a laugh. "You can't give away too much because we're doing a lot right now. Throwing in a lot and you're going to have to wait to see."

As for Odunze, getting a full season under his belt and now having a full offseason ahead of him as allowed him to focus on the details going into his sophomore season.

"It's just honing in on all the different things that comes to wide receiver play," Odunze told reporters in April. "That includes blocking, that includes knowing scheme, and the run game. Being violent at the point of attack, route running, catching, contested catches, all those things. I'm looking to just hone in on all those things and master the scheme... Just being able to unfold that this year and let it all come out on the field with the right pieces intact."

Focusing on the details is something Johnson has been instilling in all of his players throughout OTAs and now into minicamp.

"It's fun but intense," Moore added about practice. "Lot of hard work goes into it. You gotta be on your Ps and Qs and you gotta know the playbook."

In the long run, all this hard work and attention to detail will pay off. By the time the season rolls around all these things will be second nature and all the players can start progressing to more advanced concepts.

"We're all excited," Burden said during rookie minicamp. "It's going to be a huge year for the Chicago Bears and I can't wait to get to work with those guys."
