You may be asking how the Miami Dolphins can possibly be an elite team in 2025.
There are many factors, and I have three reasons why the Miami Dolphins can be an elite team in the National Football League. So, before we take a Deep End Dive into why I think the Dolphins can take that next step forward to becoming elite in 2025, we first have to ask ourselves what an elite team is in my book.
What Is An Elite Team
An elite team in the National Football League, in my eyes, is a team that is the best of the best in the league in all aspects, and that has been there and done that before. There are only five teams that I can think of in this league that I can classify as elite teams. Those teams are the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, and the Philadelphia Eagles.
These teams have one thing in common: they either have a superstar quarterback or are a well-balanced team, especially Detroit under Dan Campbell. Detroit does not have the flashiest quarterback in Jared Goff, but he has weapons all around to throw to, similar to Tua with the Dolphins. But what separates the Lions from the Dolphins is that they are a well-managed team with the ability to win games when it matters most.
The other four teams have a star quarterback and a good enough supporting cast for them, especially with the Eagles, who, like the Lions, are a well-managed team with a proper culture, and that is something that these teams have that the Dolphins, at least until they do something about it, do not have.
I have not even mentioned the superhuman quarterbacks that are Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson. These quarterbacks do not all need to have the receiving core that the Dolphins have to have success because it starts with the quarterback position, and then they fill out the rest of their roster with quality players.
The Chiefs for example won two Super Bowls with barely a supporting cast for Patrick Mahomes why is that because he had a well balanced attack along with not having the crap offensive line that the Dolphins have had up until now. They also had a top-tier defense led by their defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo.
So this is my classification of an elite team in the National Football League, which leads me into how the Dolphins can take that next step.
Take Care Of Business, Especially In The Cold
In my opinion, the most important thing the Dolphins need to do to become an elite team is take care of business against the teams over .500, the teams they should be beating, and then the teams in their division. This will fix one of the bad narratives surrounding the Miami Dolphins, and that is that they cannot beat teams over five hundred. The other thing they need to do is take care of business against the teams they should be beating, which they have done a very good job of doing over the last three years. However they have only won I believe one game against a team over five hundred and that is the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Eve 2023. I could be mistaken, so do not quote me on that.
Lastly, the teams in their division will benefit, which will help them win their division, the AFC East, for the first time since 2008. That is assuming they can take care of business say in Buffalo for example and that Thursday Night game week three will be a test for them to see if they can go on the road and win in a hostile environment especially Buffalo and Pittsburgh later in the season on Monday Night Football which that too will be a big test as any prime time game is for this team. Speaking of the Pittsburgh game, that leads me into the cold-weather thing, where they have to learn to play in the elements.
If they continue to suffer from self-inflicted wounds in the cold weather, they will likely have a subpar season as a result. To win in the playoffs, you may need to go on the road to say Buffalo, Pittsburgh, or Kansas City, so it is how the Dolphins respond to adversity that can determine the success of this team. So that explains how the Miami Dolphins can take care of business, especially in the cold-weather games.
Speak On The Field, Not With Just Words
In order to become elite, you need to speak on the field, not with words. What do I mean by that I am talking about still doing press conferences but following through with what you are saying especially with the culture change aspect of it. The way you change your culture is through winning games on the field, and that is something I addressed in the last segment, with going on the road in hostile environments in cold conditions and winning.
If the Dolphins can do that, then that would be huge momentum builders for them. They can win ten, eleven, possibly twelve or more wins if they play their cards right by winning through speaking on the field, not just with words. It honestly drives me bananas that they still have not followed through on the things that they are saying. If they actually did the things they said, not only would they win more games, they would probably win their division and a playoff game or two. So that is how I think the Miami Dolphins need to take action on the field, not just with words, to become elite.
Be Unfazed By Tough Losses
Even the elite teams lose a game or two during the regular season, and it is how the Miami Dolphins respond to those losses that can determine a lot about this team, specifically in losses. You obviously do not want to lose too many games, but when you do, this is where adversity kicks in for this team, especially with the teams over five hundred narrative that I discussed earlier. The Chiefs are unfazed by loss because they know how to respond to adversity the Dolphins on the other hand have not learnt that yet.
Of course, when you get to the playoffs, it is single-game elimination, so you cannot lose once you are there. We Dolphins fans know this well because they have not won a playoff game in twenty-five years. Could this be the year that they do it? We will have to wait and see, because just like anything with this Dolphins team, for myself, I have to see it to believe it.
Miami Dolphins Status In Summary
So, how does this sum up the Dolphins’ status as a team? They are a very good team that beats up on bad teams, and not so much the other good, very good, or elite teams. I discussed what an elite team is and how the Dolphins can achieve it. I discussed how they need to take care of business, especially in the cold weather, where they need to win the games against the teams above five hundred, and in hostile environments. Then they need to act on the field rather than just speak with words, mainly because they cannot simply say something and then not follow through on it.
Lastly, they need to respond to the losses and be unfazed by them so that they do not lose as many games as last season’s nine games. The Miami Dolphins can take that step up to elite status one hundred percent, but they need to show me rather than tell me.
