The Packers boast an ascending talent in tight end Tucker Kraft, and a young emergent cast of wide receivers around Jordan Love, but one player returning from injury could hold he key to taking head coach Matt LaFleur’s offense to the next level.
Often overshadowed by Kraft, while battling through myriad injuries the past two seasons, Luke Musgrave has become a bit of a forgotten man in Green Bay’s offense. However, if Musgrave is fully healthy, the pieces might be in place for the 24-year-old to break out in 2025.
Musgrave, chosen by the Packers in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has caught 41 passes for 397 yards and a touchdown, thus far in his career, but is working his way back from a significant ankle injury after his rookie season was derailed by a lacerated kidney.
But, if Musgrave can get on the field and be an effective contributor in the passing game, LaFleur and the Packers’ playbook could feature an added wrinkle this season.
“[There have been] some questions about Musgrave’s role in the offense,” CheeseheadTV’s Mark Oldacres writes of Musgrave. “But he still has an extremely rare and valuable skill set, featuring elite size and speed at the position, which can be weaponized by LaFleur.
“Having Musgrave healthy and firing on all cylinders could mean the Packers are able to deploy 12 personnel, utilizing both of their tight ends, to cause real problems for opposing defenses as they try to discern whether they need more heavy or light defenders on the field.”
Being able to deploy two-tight end sets not to mention Musgrave’s pass catching ability more frequently could be an added bonus for Love and the Packers this season.
