It's official: Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen will be the Indianapolis Colts next head coach.

How will the Eagles offense adapt without Steichen?

Steichen will be greatly missed. Since joining the team in 2021, he's turned the Eagles into one of the best offenses in the league.

The Eagles' 2,715 rushing yards as a team lead the league in 2021. They were a top-five rushing attack this year behind one of the best offensive lines in the league.

The Eagles also gained the second most yards in the league this season, per StatMuse. Only the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs gained more yards.

This was after the Eagles ranked in the bottom half of the league in terms of offensive production in 2020. Steichen took over a lifeless offense and turned it into a powerhouse.

Of course, inheriting new weapons like Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown played a big factor, but Steichen's first-class coaching ability cannot be understated.

Steichen has enjoyed a fast rise since joining the NFL's coaching ranks. He's gained a reputation as a quarterback guru. In 2020, he helped Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert win Offensive Rookie of the Year as the team's offensive coordinator. 

During his tenure with the Eagles, Steichen developed Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts into an MVP candidate and guided an offense that won the NFC title. 

The Eagles and Colts have swapped coaches in numerous times over the years. When the Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2017, Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich left the Eagles for the Colts' open head-coaching job. 

Three years later, the Eagles hired Reich's offensive coordinator, Nick Sirianni. Now, Steichen is heading to the Colts.  If history were to repeat itself, than it's entirely possible that the Eagles offense struggles after soaring to new heights. 

Naturally, the Eagles will have to go through the Super Bowl hangover next year. They also lost both their coordinators. 

When the Eagles went to the Super Bowl in 2004, a 24-21 loss to the Patriots, they went 6-10 the next season. 

In 2018, the reigning champion Eagles went 9-7 and regressed on offense. They went from averaging 28.6 points per game when they won the Super Bowl to 22.9 points per game the next season. That's basically one less touchdown per game. 

Steichen's replacement will have big shoes to fill. If the Eagles want to achieve the level of success they had this season, it'll be accomplished by a fresh, new mind on offense.  

Eagles quarterback coach Brian Johnson and Eagles passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo have been linked to the vacant offensive coordinator position.
