'Huge Divide' Between 49ers, Trent Williams; Trade Possible

The San Francisco 49ers and star offensive tackle Trent Williams are stuck in a staring contest over the 12-time Pro Bowler’s massive cap hit, and it could result in a trade. A first-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Williams remains one of the game’s premier tackles despite his age and will undoubtedly make the Hall of Fame when he calls it a career. However, the offensive tackle currently carries a staggering $47 million cap hit, which the 49ers simply cannot justify. If he’s to return to San Francisco in 2026, it will have to be on a revised contract.

While the two sides are working on a new deal, SportsBoom’s Jason La Canfora says there’s a “huge divide” between the player and team. While the two sides will continue to work toward an agreement, it’s safe to assume the 49ers will trade Trent Williams if they can’t agree to a revised contract. Even with his high price tag, any contender looking for an upgrade along the offensive line should do everything in their power to land the star offensive tackle.

49ers, Trent Williams Far Apart In Contract Discussions; Trade Could Materialize

Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers made the playoffs last year and almost took down MVP Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round. Since then, the team has added plenty of talent to the roster, and the future appears bright for this franchise for the first time in forever. However, this isn’t a perfect roster, and they could continue to improve the unit with a Trent Williams trade.

On paper, the Panthers have two adequate left tackles in Ikem Ekwonu and free agent signee Rasheed Walker. However, Ekwonu is coming off a season-ending injury and still has no timeline for return, while Walker is an unremarkable starter on a cheap contract. Williams would easily be the best left tackle on the roster and could help this team repeat as NFC South champions as they set their eyes on a deep playoff run.

Houston Texans

C.J. Stroud is a starting-caliber quarterback, but last year’s playoff fiasco showed he’s not the type of player who can win regardless of his surroundings. Stroud’s struggles against pressure date back to his college days, and the Texans have not built a proper offensive line to protect their young passer. One player cannot fix an entire unit, but a Trent Williams trade would go a long way towards improving Stroud’s life.

The Texans have a championship-caliber defense, and they must capitalize on the end of Stroud’s rookie contract. The quarterback will earn a massive raise in the near future, either with the Texans or another team, which means they’ll never have a better chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Going all-in and getting Williams makes all the sense in the world.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have an elite interior offensive line, but the tackle position needs some work. First-round pick Josh Simmons looked good at left tackle when on the field, but right tackle is more of an issue. The team released Jawaan Taylor, which means veteran journeyman Jaylon Moore is slated to start at right tackle. This isn’t good news, especially considering Patrick Mahomes is coming off a season-ending ACL injury and probably won’t be as mobile as usual. Trading for Trent Williams and moving Simmons to the right side of the line should give the Chiefs a top-five offensive line in football.
