Aaron Rodgers' tenure with the New York Jets hasn't been what the player or what the team hoped for when he was acquired from the Green Bay Packers in 2023. An injury in the first year and several individual and collective issues in the second one created a scenario that led to the Jets' call to end the partnership.
The quarterback is still technically under contract through 2025, but at this point it's just a matter of how the team will execute the move—via trade or release.
For right now, we can only discuss where Aaron Rodgers might play in 2025, presuming that he won't retire from the NFL.
These are five possible teams for Rodgers next season.
This is the most likely option at this point. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are both free agents in 2025, so the Steelers will really need to look at their avenues to acquire a quarterback. Maybe Wilson wants to stay, but he would certainly be much more expensive than he was in 2024.
Rodgers probably wanted more control, and that's why he went to the Jets after years with the Packers. But it didn't work, so going to a franchise where he would be the quarterback, and nothing beyond that, with a respected head coach in Mike Tomlin would make sense.
I know this is a really unlikely scenario, but come on. This would complete the Brett Favre way to the final steps. And considering how many similarities there are between these two situations, it's fun to think about it.
Sam Darnold will be a free agent, and there's no certainty about his future. JJ McCarthy theoretically is the future in Minnesota, but he is recovering from a serious knee injury and had what can be considered a setback recently. If general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O'Connell want another short-term option, Rodgers can give it to them — and pairing him with a strong offensive line and a great receiving core has some potential.
Well, it would also give Rodgers the chance to face the Packers twice a year.
The Titans' experiment with Will Levis has failed, and the team has multiple avenues to find a successor. The most obvious one is the first overall pick in the draft. However, the 2025 class is considered weak.
This brings to the table more than one possibility. The Titans might get a player from another position, trade down, or even take a quarterback to develop with a veteran as a bridge. In these scenarios, Rodgers would be a solid alternative to play right away.
With the lack of talent on the Titans' roster right now, it would make sense to add Rodgers and some of his friends—Davante Adams and Allen Lazard are examples of players who could be helpful. Tennessee would have the ability to give Rodgers some level of command that other teams wouldn't be willing to.
The leadership structure in New York needs quick answers after it failed with Daniel Jones. With the Giants, Aaron Rodgers would have a new opportunity to succeed in the New York market, and it's fair to think that the team would give him some power to bring in guys with whom he would like to play.
It's not exactly a win-now situation either, but at this point Rodgers will have limited options.
This is another scenario where the roster isn't very good, but head coach Pete Carroll secures a level of competency that's not easy to replicate in the NFL. Owner Mark Davis would be happy with this splash after starting Gardner Minshew in 2024.
It's weird to think that Davante Adams could return to the Raiders after what happened over the past two years, but Rodgers in Las Vegas would be a realistic outcome.
