'I don't think about those things' - Titans HC Brian Callahan tries to block out noise of firing as hot seat talk grows louder
USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Titans (0-3) lost at home to the Indianapolis Colts (3-0) on Sunday. Coach Brian Callahan desperately needed a win for he and his team to show any proof of concept that they can be a successful NFL program.

They failed spectacularly.

Brian Callahan's Titans are losers

Its all they do.

Since being hired in January of 2024, Tennessee has lost 17 of a possible 20 games with Callahan at the helm. Callahan's .158 winning percentage would be considered the worst in NFL history. His team faces an upcoming three-game road trip at Houston (0-3), Las Vegas (1-2) and Arizona (2-1).

While that hardly seems like a murder's row, these Titans are capable of losing to anyone. They usually do.

I asked Callahan how many more chances he thinks he'll have to get this right before the organization fires him.

"I don't really worry about that to be honest," Callahan said on Sunday. "My focus is on trying to make sure our football team is in as good a place as possible, and the rest of that stuff is what it is. I don't think about those things. You really can't. This is hard enough as it is to put those other things and think about that, it doesn't do anybody any good. So, I just go to work and work as hard as I can. I put as much effort as I can into this, that is what it is."

That's the right answer.

Unfortunately for Callahan, everything else about his on-field product goes wrong.  Down 17-6 at the end of the first half, Tennessee was in position to try a long field goal and narrow their margins. Indecision from Callahan and staff on the sideline forced them to take a timeout after Indianapolis had already called one. The Titans, who lead the league in penalties ahead of Monday Night Football, then shot themselves in the foot with a delay of game penalty out of their own stoppage.

Kicker Joey Slye's attempt was then pushed back to 62 yards. It was unsuccessful.

It was just the latest example of a poorly coached team that finds ways to hurt itself. In-game flubs are constantly compounded by all the issues that last year's Tennessee team had (penalties, poor offensive line play) that have not been rectified over a 20-game sample size. It has become the hallmark of a Callahan-coached team.

The Titans identity has become losing.
