'I don't think I even hit the tee' - Jon Robinson discussed his Isaiah Wilson draft pick swing and miss as Titans GM
George Walker IV / Tennessean.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

Former Tennessee Titans GM Jon Robinson broke his silence on a number of topics regarding the end of his tenure with the team earlier this week, including the most infamous First Round draft bust of all time: Isaiah Wilson. Robinson and Co. selected the Georgia tackle with the 29th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, expecting him to be the cost-controlled solution for them at RT that they needed after letting Jack Conklin walk in free agency. In case you need a brief history lesson on how this pick ended up going, he played a grand total of four (4) snaps in the NFL before crashing out of the league.

Robinson was asked about the process that led to this horrendous selection by Chase McCabe and Joe Dubin on their radio show on 102.5 this week. And to Robinson's credit, he did a decent job of wearing it:

"I won't get into all the details on that one. Let's just say that that was the COVID year, right? And I think that it got shut down on us in mid March, right? And we... it's not an excuse at the end of the day. It's my job to pick the right guy. And we weren't able to kind of do a full process. And to liken it to a teeball game, I don't even know if I hit the tee. Sometimes in a tee ball game, the kids will swing, and then the ball just falls down. I don't even think I hit the tee on that one."

What an appropriate metaphor for that situation. The difference, of course, is that this was like a grown man whiffing on the tee ball. Far more embarrassing (or in this case, damaging) than when the kiddos do it. Now, many will point to the COVID non-excuse excuse-making as... well, just that. A sorry excuse. But to me, it's more a reason than a true excuse. I believe Robinson when he says being flung into a virtual distancing world in the middle of the scouting process played a big part in his failures. But when you remember that 31 other general managers had to operate under the same circumstances, this reason becomes entirely uncompelling. A reason the explains what happened, sure, but does anything but excuse the failure on the front office's part.

"There was stuff with that one that, again, I can't get into details on, but, um, yeah. it was. It's like... how do I frame this? I guess they have those dating apps now where they have a picture of somebody, and you click on it. I've never been on one, I wouldn't know how to go on one. I don't want to go on one. I love my wife. But it's like I picked the dating app and I thought this was showing up, and the person didn't match the picture. It was kind of like the wrong person showed up."

That's a classic case of getting catfished, Jon. And yes, the Titans certainly got catfished by Wilson. Big time.
