I Fear Stephen Ross Won’t Make More Changes

Let me start by saying that I’m happy the Miami Dolphins have won two games in a row and are playing better. They also have a chance to win some more games to end the season.

However, my biggest fear is that, like last year, the Dolphins got off to a bad start and then finished strong, and if it happens again, owner Stephen Ross will keep head coach Mike McDaniel and give Champ Kelly the permanent GM position. To me, that would be malpractice on Ross’s part, especially with McDaniel.

Like I said, I’m happy the team has won two games in a row, but last Sunday against the Washington Commanders, they got lucky. McDaniel, for whatever reason, decided with less than two minutes to go in a tie game on 4th and goal at the 1-yard line to go for it rather than kick the football to have the team go ahead.

Washington had no timeouts and really didn’t show all game that they can move the ball with the passing game.

The Dolphins were stuffed on 4th-and-goal and gave the ball back to Washington. Then, after a 1st down at the 30-yard line and the clock running, McDaniel uses his timeouts, which I didn’t understand because it helps Washington to regroup and stop the clock.

Washington missed a field goal, then threw an interception that set up the Dolphins’ game-winning field goal in overtime, but it bailed McDaniel out; otherwise, we would have had to hear for two weeks what a dumbass decision he made.

The Dolphins played their best game under Mike McDaniel two weeks ago against the Buffalo Bills. However, I’m wondering why his teams have never played like that against the Bills consistently or any other playoff contender. They always have no-shows and don’t put up much of a fight.

McDaniel also had to burn a timeout in the first half with the play clock running down because he didn’t get the play in on time. That is something that has happened in his entire 4 years as head coach. You can make prop bets for every game on how many times the Dolphins will have to burn a timeout or take a delay of game penalty because of this.

McDaniel is a good offensive-minded coach, but as a head coach, he seems to be in over his head. His teams aren’t disciplined enough; he’s inconsistent when it comes to sticking with the running game, wasting challenges, and so forth.

My biggest fear is that the Dolphins will go on a winning streak, and Ross will keep him as head coach because he wants to “keep continuity”, which I get, but have you been seeing this team sink the last couple of years, Mr. Ross? If you are going to do a full evaluation, then you really must look at the whole body of work under McDaniel, and there’s more bad than good.

I also feel that Ross would make Kelly the GM. Now, this might be unfair because Kelly has been around the league and is qualified for the job. However, the Dolphins need to hire a new GM from the outside rather than promote and have him bring in his own football staff, as well as their head coach.

If Ross keeps things as is, I feel this will be 2004 all over again. When the owner Wayne Huizenga promoted Rick Spielman as GM and kept head coach Dave Wannstedt, but that didn’t work out well as the Dolphins sank further with a 4-12, and then he fired Wannstedt. He brought in Nick Saban, and Speilman was phased out. What Huizenga should have done was wipe the slate clean after 2003 because at that time, just like now, the Dolphins needed a new voice from outside the organization with a new GM and Head Coach. This is a scenario that could happen again.

The Dolphins are going to be going through another transition and possibly full rebuild with an overhaul of the roster. Then why keep McDaniel and promote Kelly when it’s not going to get better right away?

This team needs a new direction from someone outside. The question is, does Ross realize this, or does he have someone who is close to him who will tell him that? I honestly don’t think, and because of this, it will be another round of settling for mediocrity for this franchise.

I know Ross doesn’t like to fire people, especially since he isn’t involved as much with the football operations, but at some point, he must realize he has to shake things up even more and step outside his comfort zone.
