When the Minnesota Vikings extended Josh Metellus over the weekend, they did so knowing that he was going to continue being the versatile chess piece that has been a revolutionary asset to Brian Flores' defense.
It isn't just Metellus' ability to play all across the defense, including lining up everywhere from defensive line to deep safety.

What he does for the Vikings is something that the majority of National Football League teams don't have in a true chess piece who can do a multitude of different things. He spoke to Ari Meirov on the NFL Spotlight Podcast about being the most versatile player in the league.
"Yes, I would say easily. I mean, I'm not trying to be overconfident or anything. It's the track record. I mean, I think two years ago, I played the most snaps in the league. If you added up defense and special teams, and last year, I played almost 1200 snaps. I mean, I still play almost 50% of the special team snaps. I play every snap on defense in different spots. You know, we had a $15 million a year safety, and we had a Hall of Famer back there. So I couldn't play safety as much as I wanted to. If you could show me another guy who's doing what I'm doing, I would love to see it. I know a lot of guys switch from safety to nickel, maybe like nickel to dime, but I haven't seen a guy go from first down that linebacker, second down to nickel, third down to safety, and if it's a fourth down, I'll probably be an A (gap) guy. I've never seen a guy do that, even just trying to watch tape to find guys like me, I have to pull pieces from, like Derwin (James) and Buddha (Baker) and Julian Love, like, you know, different Kyle Hamilton, like, just different Brian Branch. Like different guys. We're all so different, but I feel like I can do a lot of different things as well. So it's just, I mean, if you want to call it versatile, you want to call it just a good football player. That's why I tell people. I say I'm just a good football player. You might not think I'm the best linebacker, safety, nickel in the world, but I'm probably one of the best football players in the world, and it shows in my track record."
It shouldn't be much of a surprise that Metellus is in the conversation for being the most versatile player in the league when he does so much on the back end at a high level, and the Vikings rewarded him for it.
