Immense Pressure On Atlanta Falcons James Pearce Jr. Going Into Regular Season
USA TODAY Sports

Teams typically have a little leeway when it comes to every other position being drafted outside of quarterbacks, but first-round selection James Pearce Jr. faces immense pressure.

Atlanta traded back into the first round to select Pearce Jr. With any first-round selection, teams have a little wiggle room when it comes to any other position other than quarterbacks. Rookie quarterbacks, when thrust into a starting role, are expected to lead a franchise immediately, regardless of their capabilities. Ultimately, it is up to them to prove themselves on the field. Scouts base their evaluations on stats, interviews, and other factors, but the position is under the microscope from all angles.

James Pearce Jr.'s situation is looked at a little differently. Yes, the leeway is there for mistakes to be made, as well as progression and setbacks; however, the amount of real estate the Atlanta Falcons gave up to select him is well known throughout the league. Some NFL Insiders and league officials thought it was a little too much for Atlanta to part with to get back into the first round to select another edge rusher besides Jalon Walker. But Atlanta wanted both athletes.

Now, the pressure is seemingly on for Pearce Jr. to ball out and show that he is worth every bit of what Atlanta gave up to select him. Questions have arisen regarding Pearce Jr.'s level of maturity. Pressure is at a constant for professional athletes, but Pearce will need to work hard in camp to negate any level of negativity that may be headed his way.
