Indianapolis Colts GM Drops Major Hints At Draft Plans
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Indianapolis Colts have lingered around the fringes of playoff contention for too many seasons now, primarily hindered by their unstable quarterback situation.

However, there’s a sense that they may finally be turning the corner.

Despite limited playing time in his rookie season due to various ailments, Anthony Richardson displayed flashes of promise and electrifying talent whenever he took the field.

Recognizing his potential, General Manager Chris Ballard has made it clear that safeguarding Richardson and constructing a team around him is their foremost priority.

In a recent interview with the Indianapolis Star leading up to the NFL Draft, Ballard emphasized the team’s commitment to fortifying their young quarterback’s protection, highlighting the wealth of offensive talent available in this year’s draft pool.

“When you’ve got a young quarterback, you’ve got to protect him. You want to continue to add playmakers around him.”

Under the guidance of offensive-minded coach Shane Steichen, the Colts saw positive strides in their offensive performance during his inaugural season at the helm. Additionally, the team boasts two formidable playmakers in running back Jonathan Taylor and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., both of whom are locked in for the foreseeable future.

However, amidst the emergence of CJ Stroud and the formidable Houston Texans, the resurgent Jacksonville Jaguars, and the evolving landscape of the Tennessee Titans, the Colts cannot afford complacency.

While Richardson possesses considerable promise, the organization is keenly aware of the pitfalls of relying too heavily on a single player, as evidenced by past experiences with Andrew Luck. As they chart the course forward, the Colts are determined not to repeat history and are focused on nurturing Richardson’s talent while building a roster capable of sustained success.

With all of that being said, it will be interesting to see what Ballard has up his sleeve for the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL Draft that starts on Thursday night.
