The Indianapolis Colts will head to Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, on July 22 for training camp. There are plenty of reasons to be excited for the team this season, and all of it starts at training camp. The battle at quarterback is probably the one that is on the top of everyone’s mind, but there are also other position battles to look for. In this article, I will count down the top three things to look for at Colts training camp.
The Colts lost EJ Speed to free agency this offseason, with him signing with the Houston Texans on a one-year deal worth five million, sources confirmed by ESPN. Speed, who is 29 years old, had a very productive season in 2024 with the team. He finished the season with 142 tackles (12th in the NFL), seven tackles for losses, and five pass deflections. It will be very interesting to see which way first-year defensive coordinator Lou Armano will go in deciding who will play weak-side linebacker. The obvious choice would be second-year player Jaylon Carlies, who the team drafted in 2024 with the 151st pick in the draft.
The Colts have to fill two spots along the offensive line, one being the center and the other at right guard. They lost starting center Ryan Kelly and offensive guard Will Fries to the Vikings in free agency. The team will look for Tanor Bortolini a second year player to step in at center and second year guard Matt Gonclaves to step up as starters.
The main training camp battle will be between Jones and Richardson to see who will be starting week one against the Dolphins. The main stat to be looking at in this battle will be completion percentage. Richardson had a very poor percentage in 2024 in 11 games. He completed just over 47%, while Jones achieved a 63.3% completion rate in 10 games. It will be interesting to see how this battle plays out over the course of training camp and the preseason.
The Colts will look to solve all three of these problems by the start of the season on Sept.7 when they play host to the Dolphins inside of Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts will look to compete for the AFC South Title in 2025, and the quicker these positions are secured, the better. Stay tuned to Total Apex for all the latest Colts news this season.
