Injuries are clouding the defensive backs’ future in 2025
Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

While it seems the defensive line and the linebacker units have solidified the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive front seven, there is a concern in the defensive backfield.

Namely, as of this writing, the cornerbacks resemble more of a roll call from a MASH unit’s sick list than a defensive unit.

Four of the top five corners are either still dealing with an injury, or are still recovering from an injury. That leaves a big question mark hanging over the defensive backfield.

That’s a question that needs to be answered sometime in August out in Oxnard, California.

This is the current depth chart at defensive back for the Cowboys in a 4-2-5 defensive set, per ourlads.com:

  • LCB Trevon Diggs / Shavon Revel Jr. / Kaiir Elam / C.J. Goodwin / Luq Barcoo
  • SS Malik Hooker / Markquese Bell / Alijah Clark
  • FS Donovan Wilson / Juanyeh Thomas / Zion Childress / Mike Smith Jr.
  • RCB DaRon Bland / Caelen Carson / Josh Butler / Andrew Booth
  • NB Isreal Mukuamu / Kemon Hall / Troy Pride Jr. / Bruce Harmon

Questions Abound For Defensive Backs

Trevon Diggs is expected to open camp on the PUP list as he recovers from his knee injury. He may not even be ready for the opening week of the season either.

Diggs missed six games last year.

DaRon Bland missed the first 10 games of the 2024 season and did not have a single interception. A stunning fall from the 2023 season of nine picks and a record five returned for touchdowns.

Caelen Carson missed 11 games, including the final seven, in his rookie year and had shoulder surgery in December.

He is expected to be fully healthy by the opening of training camp in California.

Shavon Revel Jr., the Cowboys’ third round pick in last month’s draft, is coming off an ACL tear in his final year at East Carolina.

Revel only played in the first three games of the Pirates’ 13-game season last year.

But injuries, and the status of the players’ recoveries from them, aren’t the only concerns at cornerback this summer.

Kaiir Elam, a former first-round pick, was traded for, yet Dallas declined to pick up his fifth-year option. In Buffalo, in his rookie year, Elam had two picks and 41 tackles, but did give up three touchdowns in six games.

Over the next two seasons, he would only play 16 games, finishing with 40 total tackles and no interceptions.

He did recover one fumble and only yielded one touchdown in coverage during those games.

Among the rest of the cornerbacks on the roster, there isn’t much to hang one’s hat on. If Diggs, Bland, Carson, Elam, and Revel struggle, there’s not a lot behind them to fill in the gap.

Safety In Few Numbers

Malik Hooker has had back-to-back seasons for the Cowboys at strong safety and will be relied on for a third this fall.

Donavan Wilson will probably start out as the starting free safety this fall. He has put together three straight solid seasons, averaging 90 tackles a year and has four interceptions and fumble recoveries each in that span.

In his fourth year, Israel Mukuamu had his best year so far and will look to build on that in 2025 even as a backup. He could also fill in if needed as a cornerback.

Juanyeh Thomas and Markquese Bell will also look to capitalize on their playing time. With only five safeties from last year’s roster returning, they are probably locks to make this year’s team.

Alijah Clark, Zion Childress, and Bruce Harmon will likely end up on the practice squad or cut outright, barring any future injuries.

The Road Ahead

The safety seems to be secure in Dallas, for now. The big question will be the health of the corners.

If Diggs, Revel, or Carson, or any combination of the three, suffer any setbacks, look for Dallas to turn to Stephon Gilmore.

The 13-year veteran remains an unsigned free agent. He also teamed up with Bland during the younger player’s incredible 2023 run.

In a pinch, he would stabilize the corner position, at least long enough to get everyone else fully healthy.

A healthy backfield on defense just might be the difference in a winning season in 2025, or an early draft pick in 2026.

Patrick Mahomes has blunt take on Chiefs' disappointing season

The Kansas City Chiefs couldn't secure the win on Thanksgiving, dropping to 6-6 for the season after a 31-28 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys. All of Kansas City's losses have been by just one possession, and they might not even make the playoffs now. Thursday's loss followed an epic 23-20 overtime comeback win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Every time it looks like the Chiefs will get back on track, they take a couple of steps back. That's why, even though he still believes in this team, quarterback Patrick Mahomes had a pretty blunt way of describing how the season has gone for Kansas City. Patrick Mahomes calls out the Chiefs' inconsistency “Our ceiling is playing in the Super Bowl," Mahomes said, per Marleah Campbell of KCTV. "We can beat anybody, but we’ve shown that we can lose to anybody.” Mahomes was the only bright spot for Andy Reid's team in the loss. He completed 66.7% of his passes for 261 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, and kept extending plays and making things happen behind a banged-up and inefficient offensive line. Kansas City's playoff hopes are alive for now, but it can't afford any mistakes from now on. They will face the Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos at home, and they have road games against the Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee Titans. Of course, facing the best defenses in the game and three divisional rivals is far from ideal, but there won't be a better way to prove that the Chiefs' dynasty is far from over.

Details emerge on Francisco Lindor's alleged incident with Mets teammate

Mr. Smile apparently wasn’t smiling too much about one of his teammates last season. New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor had a "heated confrontation" with teammate Jeff McNeil last June, Mike Puma of the New York Post reported on Friday. Puma writes that Lindor began verbally attacking McNeil on June 20 over a defensive lapse that McNeil had during that day’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The confrontation, which was only verbal and never got physical, came in the midst of a seven-game losing streak by the Mets at the time. Puma also reports that the flashy Lindor clashed personalities during the year with the business-like Juan Soto during the season as well. Interestingly enough, the five-time All-Star Lindor also had a confrontation with McNeil in the dugout during a game in the 2021 MLB season. That confrontation did turn physical, and Lindor later offered an extremely unconvincing excuse for the incident. Meanwhile, the incident last June underscored the Mets’ struggles to get on the same page with one another during the 2025 campaign. Despite having a mammoth $342 million payroll, the Mets completely collapsed in the final weeks of the season and missed the playoffs altogether. Now there are rumors that the Mets could make some big changes this offseason, including a potential trade of McNeil. After another apparent confrontation between the veteran utilityman and the four-time Silver Slugger Award winner Lindor, it is clear that something is not quite working right now in that clubhouse.

NFL insider makes the obvious Max Brosmer to Brock Purdy comparison, and takes a damning shot at J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings are set to start rookie undrafted free agent Max Brosmer against the Seattle Seahawks, as starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy is out with a concussion. It's a tough one for the Vikings, who have dealt with quarterback injuries all season long, starting with McCarthy's high ankle sprain in Week 2, and Carson Wentz's brutal left shoulder injury suffered in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns. It's been that kind of season for the 4-7 Vikings, but arguably the most brutal aspect has been not knowing if McCarthy is the future at quarterback. With Sunday's game, the Vikings are going to get their first look at Brosmer, who has been compared by many to the elevation of Brock Purdy, including me back in August. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler takes damning shot at J.J. McCarthy The chance for Brosmer to emerge is a huge one, as the Vikings are starving for any kind of good quarterback play. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler broke down how both the Vikings and other teams feel about him "Max Brosmer, huge showcase for this guy. The Vikings know that they have something in Max Brosmer," said Fowler on Saturday morning's Sports Center. "They felt like he had a really good preseason. I talked to multiple teams who said he was cool and calm and collected in the preseason action. He's an undrafted free agent, so the expectations aren't overly high, but I'm told, just from a mental preparation standpoint, he's been really good, and they feel like, hey, maybe something can happen here." Fowler didn't stop there, comparing him to Purdy, who share very similar career arcs, with the sole difference being that Purdy was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, whereas Brosmer was one of the UDFAs with the most guaranteed money. "It was around three years to the day, Randy, that Brock Purdy made his debut week 12 of the 2022 season. He started for the 49ers. Rest is history. Now, he's one of the, you know, top 10 to 12 best quarterbacks in the league. That's a lot of expectation to put on this guy. However, you know, there is some symmetry here. Yeah, you have Kevin O'Connell's offense. They've got weapons." Fowler didn't end there, as the final line came in like a dagger in terms of McCarthy's performances this season. "They feel like, at the very least, he's going to be probably more mentally prepared than they've had this season with the struggles [at quarterback]." Calling Brosmer more mentally prepared than both McCarthy and Wentz is incredibly damning, and it could be why they decide to ride it out with Brosmer the rest of the season if things continue to go well. This isn't the first time that we've had negative words seemingly come out of the Vikings' building about this team, including McCarthy, this season, but this might be the worst of them all. Will Brosmer end up being the next guy for the Vikings? Only time will tell, but it certainly looks possible. window.addEventListener('message', function (event) {if (event.data.totalpoll event.data.totalpoll.action === 'resizeHeight') {document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-383').height = event.data.totalpoll.value;}}, false);document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-383').contentWindow.postMessage({totalpoll: {action: 'requestHeight'}}, '*'); This story was originally published by A to Z Sports on Nov 29, 2025, where it first appeared in the NFL section. Dallas Cowboys' chances of beating Lions just increased with an update the NFL world will hate to hear

The 6-5-1 Dallas Cowboys are looking to extend their win streak to four in a row next Thursday when they take on the 7-5 Detroit Lions on primetime television. Though the Lions are known as one of the best teams in the conference, they are struggling to be consistent on offense, and the defense has serious problems, too. There are a lot of factors that go into Detroit's biggest issues on offense, which was known as one of the scariest units in the league not that long ago. But it all starts with the trenches, where they simply haven't been the same. The Lions' offensive line's struggles reached the point where they had to draw former second-team All-Pro center Frank Ragnow out of retirement. However, Ragnow's return is over before it even got a chance to get going. Lions announce Ragnow failed his physical ahead of Cowboys matchup On Saturday, the Lions announced Ragnow's activation to the 53-man roster isn't happening after he failed his physical. "The medical exam revealed a Grade 3 hamstring strain that will keep him from participating for the remainder of the regular season," the team's statement reads. "For that reason, Frank will not be rejoining the Lions." It was already unlikely Ragnow would play in Week 14 due to his inactivity this year. However, the Lions are reaching must-win territory, so it wasn't out of the question. This update confirms it. It's a disappointing update even though it helps the Cowboys' chances of winning. You never want to see a star's return get ruined before it even starts. But it is what it is in football. With that being said, there's no denying it's an objectively positive development for a Dallas team starving for any break it can get as it tries to make the playoffs. Cowboys' rising DL will face struggling Lions OL Over the last few years, the motor driving the Lions' success was its offensive line. Now that it's struggling, Jared Goff's play is showing flaws, and the run game has been inconsistent. On the other side, the Cowboys' defense is quickly improving. Since Quinnen Williams' arrival via trade, Matt Eberflus' unit has shown an ability to pressure the quarterback and stop the run. While it hasn't been perfect, it's that interior defensive line that's sparked quality play. The Cowboys are 3.5-point underdogs against the Lions heading into Week 14 but this advantage in the trenches could position them to pull off a third consecutive upset. window.addEventListener('message', function (event) {if (event.data.totalpoll event.data.totalpoll.action === 'resizeHeight') {document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-375').height = event.data.totalpoll.value;}}, false);document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-375').contentWindow.postMessage({totalpoll: {action: 'requestHeight'}}, '*'); This story was originally published by A to Z Sports on Nov 29, 2025, where it first appeared in the NFL section.
