Injury Sidelines New Orleans Saints Quarterback During QB Battle

Quarterback Jake Haener Suffered an injury on Wednesday night during OTAs, per Adam Schefter.

Haener, 26, was amid a three-way competition for the starting quarterback spot with rookie Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler. Despite being seen as the long shot to win the job, the third-year quarterback has the most pro experience in the QB room.

Haener suffered an oblique strain, an injury expected to sideline the signal caller for "a couple of weeks" and prevent him from participating for the remainder of OTAs. Despite the injury, Haener is projected to be ready for training camp.

In 2024, Haener earned his first career start against the Washington Commanders. The former Fresno State quarterback completed 4 passes for 49 yards and an interception before being benched at the beginning of the second half for Rattler. Rattler played significantly better and led the team to a chance at a game-winning two-point conversion.

Haener's injury is a significant hit to his chances to battle for the starting quarterback position. Along with already being the underdog, both Shough and Rattler will be able to work on their mechanics and show their abilities to the coaching staff firsthand.

Throughout the quarterback competition, New Orleans brought in UDFA Hunter Dekkers. The signing of Dekkers creates a new competition. Instead of fighting for QB1, Haener may be in a different competition, fighting for QB3 with Dekkers.

There has been speculation that the Saints will add again to their quarterback room with a veteran. However, head coach Kellen Moore has debated this, stating "I feel like our quarterback room has some experience there in the sense that myself, Doug Nussemeier, Scott Tolzein, we've all been around this for a while from a player's and a coach's perspective."

It's clear Moore is confident in their quarterback room and staff and doesn't feel the necessity to add a veteran. Despite this, Haener still has to earn his spot and his injury is a significant hit to his chances.
