Insider addresses how Browns likely feel about Myles Garrett skipping voluntary workouts

Not long after Cleveland Browns star pass-rusher Myles Garrett rescinded his offseason trade request and signed a four-year, $160M extension that included $123.5M guaranteed in March, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam publicly challenged him "to become a real leader of the team."

Thus, some wondered if Garrett was sending a somewhat subtle message when he suggested that he was enjoying a trip to Japan as the Browns opened the voluntary organized team activities portion of the offseason program.

During the latest episode of the "Orange and Brown Talk Podcast," team insider Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer shared why head coach Kevin Stefanski and others likely aren't losing sleep about Garrett's whereabouts.

"Myles has really, truthfully, whether we like it or not, a little bit of a different set of rules than everybody else," Cabot explained. "And he has kind of earned that by being the best defensive player in the NFL, by earning NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2023, by being on the road to the Hall of Fame and by getting himself ready every single year to go out there and dominate."

Cabot referenced how current North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick previously revealed that legendary coach Bill Parcells essentially had a unique set of "rules" for New York Giants icon and Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor. Taylor is widely regarded as the greatest overall defensive player in NFL history:

It's hardly a surprise that Garrett isn't participating in at least some voluntary workouts. That said, it's noteworthy that he reportedly hasn't attended OTAs. As Jason Lloyd of The Athletic mentioned back in March, the 29-year-old has a reputation for being "frequently late to the facility" and for skipping "mandatory team activities on multiple occasions."

Few would argue that Garrett's offseason habits have hurt his performance during the season. Per the StatMuse website, only T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers has recorded more regular-season sacks (108) than Garrett (102.5) since the start of the 2017 campaign. Earlier this year, he finished third in Defensive Player of the Year Award voting for the 2024 season.

The Browns' three-day mandatory minicamp is scheduled to run from June 10-12. Perhaps Garrett will have some nice souvenirs for his teammates when he reports for those sessions.
