Even after the Cleveland Browns shockingly acquired former Pittsburgh Steelers draft bust Kenny Pickett from the Philadelphia Eagles, some wondered if Cleveland could trade for current New England Patriots backup quarterback Joe Milton III since that club has Drake Maye atop the depth chart.
However, Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand suggested that Milton is not on Cleveland's radar as of St. Patrick's Day.
"There is no evidence they are discussing it," Grossi wrote about the Browns pursuing Milton. "One drawback would be the cost. Sources closer to the situation than me expect the asking price of the Patriots to be a third-round (draft) pick. I’m not sure I’d make that deal, but I would definitely inquire to see if some conditions could be negotiated to make the deal more equitable. What about a fourth-round pick in 2026 that improves to a third if Milton plays a certain percentage of offensive snaps? He’s an intriguing talent, but far from a developed product."
A 2024 sixth-round draft pick, Milton spent his rookie season developing as an unused spectator until he was called into action for the Week 18 game versus the Buffalo Bills. He then impressed as he completed 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards with a touchdown in a 23-16 victory.
Following the NFL Scouting Combine, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported that New England could trade Milton "to the right situation to continue his development."
Cleveland has an offensive guru and a two-time NFL Coach of the Year Award winner in Kevin Stefanski. However, the club also possesses the second overall pick in this year's draft that could be spent on Colorado signal-caller Shedeur Sanders or could be used to grab the No. 1 overall selection from the Tennessee Titans so that the Browns can take Miami's Cam Ward.
As recently as Monday, Zac Jackson of The Athletic noted that he was "coming around to the idea that the Browns’ desperation might drive them to explore moving up to get Ward or take a quarterback at No. 2." Ward and Sanders are considered better prospects than Milton even though Milton largely looked like the real deal back in January.
