Insider believes Lions could move on from Jared Goff in 2023

While Lions quarterback Jared Goff is having his best statistical year since his Pro Bowl seasons in 2017 and 2018, QB is a position Detroit could look to upgrade next season, according to The Athletic’s Mike Sando.

In a recent column, Sando dissected the quarterback futures of all 32 NFL teams, and he listed the Lions as one of eight teams that could be looking for a new signal caller next season.

“The Lions got their current quarterback, Jared Goff, from the Rams,” Sando wrote. “They could get their next one via the Rams as well, given that Detroit holds Los Angeles’ first-round pick in 2023 (currently sixth). Goff’s contract becomes easy for the Lions to escape after this season. He has played well enough for the Lions to stay the course, but if the Lions are on the rise, the 2023 draft could be their last chance (for a while) to select a quarterback near the top.”

Goff ranks ninth in passing yards (2,682) and touchdowns (17), 12th in passer rating (93.5), and 23rd in completion percentage (63.7) this season. He's on pace for his most passing yards since 2019 and most touchdowns since 2018.

As of Tuesday morning, Detroit has the No. 3 and 13 picks in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, which features plenty of QBs ranked in the top 100 including Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Alabama’s Bryce Young, Kentucky’s Will Levis, Florida’s Anthony Richardson, Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker, and Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke.
