Insider not convinced Aaron Rodgers goes to Jets even with Nathaniel Hackett

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport isn't convinced the New York Jets hiring Nathaniel Hackett as their new offensive coordinator definitely means they're getting Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers this offseason.

"The problem is that one, Nathaniel Hackett doesn't run the Jets," Rapoport explained during an appearance on the WFAN "Tiki and Tierney" program, per Ryan Chichester of Audcacy. Rapoport mentioned that Hackett failed to get Rodgers to the Denver Broncos as head coach of that organization last winter before the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player signed an extension with the Packers in March.

"I don't know that the Packers would be willing to trade him this year," Rapoport continued about Rodgers. "I mean, (backup) Jordan Love is more viable, so I guess, theoretically, it would make sense. Last year, they weren't. So if Denver hired (Hackett) to get Rodgers, it obviously didn't work."

The Jets had repeatedly been linked in stories and rumors with Rodgers even before they hired the man who served as his offensive coordinator with the Packers from 2019 through the 2021 season. New York head coach Robert Saleh did little to quiet such speculation when he confirmed on Thursday the Jets "are committed to finding a veteran" at the sport's most important position.

However, Rapoport indicated it's not a sure thing the Packers will trade Rodgers regardless of what he thinks about Green Bay's roster. Interestingly, Rapoport said Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers "is probably a better chance right now" than Rodgers for the Jets. Garoppolo can hit free agency when the new league year opens in March.

"I hope, and what I believe, is that Robert Saleh hired Nathaniel Hackett because he has been in his career, at times, a very good coordinator, is a veteran play-caller and will do a good job with whoever is playing quarterback for the Jets," Rapoport remarked. Such words likely won't stop Jets fans from calling into WFAN and other local stations to discuss their dreams of Rodgers wearing a Gang Green No. 12 this coming fall.
