Insider offers peculiar reason for Mike Vrabel’s inability to land another HC job

Following a successful six-year tenure with the Tennessee Titans, former head coach Mike Vrabel didn’t land any of the eight head-coaching jobs that were available this offseason.

Despite having an impressive resume that features an AFC Championship game appearance and two division titles in six seasons, there seemed to be little interest in Vrabel after he was fired by the Titans although he was expected to be one of the hottest free-agent candidates during this year’s coaching cycle.

While there are likely several reasons why Vrabel is still unemployed, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini revealed on an episode of  “The Athletic Football Show” that an anonymous general manager admitted to her that Vrabel’s physically imposing 6-foot-4, 260-pound frame may have played a factor.

“I don’t think there was a fit for him,” Russini said. “I don’t think he sat in front of any owner who thought that his style was going to work for what they were looking for. I had a GM at the Senior Bowl who mentioned to me Vrabel’s physical build, that he’s a very large human being and can be very intimidating to people in an organization that are going to be part of these decisions. And that is a factor.”

Russini also hinted that Vrabel’s age worked against him as well.

Of the eight head-coaching hires, six of them — Raheem Morris (47), Antonio Pierce (45), Dave Canales (42), Bill Callahan (39), Jerod Mayo (37), Mike Macdonald (36) — were younger than the 48-year-old Vrabel.

“I feel like also from an age factor, Vrabel got stuck in that weird late 40’s-early 50’s bracket, where you’re not really young anymore,” Russini added. “You’re not [Seattle Seahawks coach] Mike Macdonald running around.”

Vrabel had a 54-45 record in six seasons with the Titans with four straight winning seasons, three playoff appearances, two division titles and an AFC Championship game appearance.

He has the third-most wins in franchise history behind Jeff Fisher (110) and Bum Phillips (55) and the third-best win percentage (.545) among coaches with 90 or more games.
