Insider provides logical explanation for Tom Brady’s remote ownership

While Tom Brady has played a major role in shaping the offseason for the Las Vegas Raiders as minority owner, it was recently revealed by head coach Pete Carroll that the legendary quarterback is not usually present at the team’s facilities.

“We’re phone buddies,” Carroll said on Brock & Salk for Seattle Sports. “He hasn’t been out here but one time since we’ve been here, but we’ve talked a ton of times, and talking philosophy with Tom, you can imagine what a thrill it is, because he’s the all-time competitor. It’s not just how he played, it’s how he lived, and how he sees the world, and how he attacks every opportunity he has. We’re so eye-to-eye on that, it’s been a blast. It’s really been fun.”

For those curious as to why Brady has elected to remain largely absent from the Raiders, an insider has provided a reasonable line of thinking.

Brady has a valid reason for staying away from team affairs.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Brady has stayed away largely to avoid taking attention off of Carroll and general manager John Spytek, both of whom were hired in large part due to the future Hall of Famer’s influence.

“As I understand it, Brady’s cognizant of how his mere presence can take the oxygen out of whatever room he’s in,” wrote Breer. “So to empower Carroll and GM John Spytek, whom Brady was with in Tampa, he’s tried to make himself physically scarce, staying back in South Florida where he and two of his three children reside.”

While Brady has come through Las Vegas once to help out with the trade for quarterback Geno Smith, he has mostly stayed as a point of reference while Carroll and Spytek build their vision of the Raiders.

Brady has done his part this offseason to improve the Raiders, bringing in limited partners who can help the team make good on financial obligations to coaching and general manager candidates. He has also brought in people who agree with his general philosophy on bringing in high-character players to the organization, and decisions such as the extension of pass rusher Maxx Crosby reflect that thinking. Outside of that general framework, however, Brady has allowed Carroll and Spytek to do their jobs, which is a hallmark of good ownership.

The influence of Brady has played a role for the Raiders, even if he has chosen to keep himself scarce from a physical standpoint.
