Insider provides major update on Kirk Cousins' future with Vikings

Even though doubts about Kirk Cousins' future linger after he suffered a season-ending Achilles tear, the Minnesota Vikings reportedly want to bring him back next season.

"It's my understanding now that the Vikings and Cousins are much more receptive to him coming back in 2024," Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz said on Tuesday. "That could potentially mean a one-year contract, I'm told."

Cousins, who is on a one-year, $35M deal, has made three Pro Bowls and posted a 50-37-1 starting record in six seasons with Minnesota. He is also a locker room favorite. Before the Vikings' Week 9 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, several teammates wore Cousins' T-shirts to support the injured quarterback.

The 35-year-old underwent a successful surgery on Nov. 1. Per the Cleveland Clinic, it typically takes four to six months to fully recover from an Achilles tear. However, high-impact activities, like running and jumping, require a longer timeline.

The franchise should consider re-signing proven backup Joshua Dobbs. The Vikings acquired Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals before the trade deadline. In two games, he has led them to back-to-back victories, completed 67.2% of his passes and accounted for five TDs (three passing and two rushing).

The 28-year-old is on a one-year, $2M contract and will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Minnesota can afford to extend him. Per Spotrac, his market value is a two-year deal worth $7.3M annually.

The Vikings (6-5) are in a good position. It appears they're on the same page with Cousins, and they could still make the playoffs. The New York Times simulator notes Minnesota has an 84% chance to make the postseason.
