Insider questions Kyler Murray's future with Cardinals

It’s been a roller coaster of a 2025-26 season thus far for quarterback Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals (2-4).

A 2-0 start was four seconds away from becoming 3-0 before San Francisco 49ers kicker Eddy Pineiro hit a game-winning field goal, which appears to have changed the trajectory of the Cardinals' season.

From that point forward, it’s been ugly in Arizona. It culminated with Murray suffering a foot injury that sidelined him for Week 6, which turned out to be the team's fourth consecutive loss, this time to the Indianapolis Colts

Despite not having their franchise quarterback, the Cardinals put up a strong fight on the road against the AFC South-leading Colts, dropping a 31-27 battle. It was interesting to see the team rally around backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who had the best statistical passing game this season for Arizona (27-of-44, 320 yards, two touchdowns and one interception).

Seeing Brissett come in and run the offense so seamlessly, and quite frankly, better than Murray has this year, raised concerns regarding the 2019 first overall pick’s level of play.

With that in mind, insider Mike Florio recently shared his thoughts on Murray’s future as a Cardinal, or whether there even is one, during the latest episode of "Pro Football Talk."

The 28-year-old is in his second year of the five-year, $230.5M extension he signed with the Cardinals in 2022, per Spotrac. The deal includes a club option following the 2027-28 campaign.

Kyler Murray could use a fresh start

While some may view a fresh start as a negative for Murray, it could be the change of scenery he needs.

Murray’s numbers haven’t come close to the standard he set in 2020-21 (3,971 passing yards, 26 TDs, 12 interceptions, 819 rushing yards and 11 rushing TDs) when he was in MVP discussions deep into the season.

The weapons around him have come and gone, but Murray has yet to find a connection with wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., so it might be time that everyone involved begins again elsewhere.

Florio questioned who would have an interest in acquiring his services, but with quarterbacks hard to find, there would undoubtedly be interested suitors.

The Las Vegas Raiders need to upgrade at the position, as do the Cleveland Browns. Not to mention the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have to plan for post-Aaron Rodgers; the Colts, as it remains unknown whether Daniel Jones is a true franchise quarterback; and even the Minnesota Vikings, depending on J.J. McCarthy’s development.

The ever-changing NFL landscape also factors in thanks to injuries and other transactions, so don’t think Arizona won’t be able to find a taker for Murray.

That said, it will be fascinating to see how the remainder of the season plays out for Murray and the Cardinals. The QB's future with the team could depend on it.
