Patrick Mahomes’ recovery has become important as the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for the upcoming season. The latest update from NFL insider Ian Rapoport spreads optimism regarding the quarterback.
Rapoport’s biggest revelation wasn’t Mahomes’ projected return date but the quarterback’s intensive rehabilitation routine following surgery. According to Rapoport, Mahomes has been busy in rehabilitation almost immediately after surgery, showing the same work ethic that defined his NFL career.
“By the time the season starts will be a little under nine months,” said insider Ian Rapoport as per his X post. “That is awfully quick, but Mahomes was back in the Chiefs’ building. The next day after surgery, he has been spending seven hours or so in the building, rehabbing as much as humanly possible, and certainly does seem like Mahomes is on track beyond the field.”
Rapoport’s update on X highlighted just how determined Mahomes is to accelerate his recovery. According to the insider, the quarterback has been spending around seven hours each day at the Chiefs’ facility and remains on track for a Week 1 return.
While no recovery can be rushed, the Chiefs quarterback seems to be grabbing every opportunity to get stronger and more confident. Mahomes suffered tears to both his ACL and LCL, which makes the rehabilitation process more complicated.
The surgery was done quickly for the best possible chances of him returning to this season, although the Chiefs’ medical staff is expected to stay cautious.
The Chiefs have prepared for every scenario possible. They added veteran QB Justin Fields during the offseason to ensure that if Mahomes is not fully healthy for the start of the regular season. The team officials are not rushing their franchise QB back before he is healthy.
Mahomes has built one of the NFL’s greatest resumés, winning three Super Bowls, three Super Bowl MVP awards, and two MVP awards while becoming the face of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Even with an extensive rehabilitation process ahead, Mahomes is not backing away from his goals.
The Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes made it clear that his focus is on returning to the team’s regular season. While recovering from the ACL, he acknowledged that the final decision will be on the medical staff and the coaching team.
“That’s my goal,” Mahomes told Caroline Fenton on Wednesday’s edition of Yahoo Sports. “I’ve said that since the beginning is being ready to go Week 1. I can’t predict the future, and I know that it’s a long process. It’s not just my decision, but at the same time, I’m going to give the doctors and the coaches every single opportunity I can to let me be out there Week 1.”
Mahomes has already participated in offseason activities on a limited basis, showing steady progress in his recovery. He has avoided full-speed team drills.
The Kansas City Chiefs will open the 2026 season against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football, making Week 1 a milestone for Mahomes if he receives medical clearance.
