When the Las Vegas Raiders made the decision to hire Pete Carroll as their head coach, they knew it wasn't going to be a long-term answer. They only gave Carroll a three-year contract with a fourth-year team option.
When he coaches his first game in the 2025 season, he will be the oldest head coach in NFL history at 73. Three years is still a long time away, but many Raiders fans have been wondering if Carroll will start grooming a possible replacement at some point.
Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly or defensive coordinator Patrick Graham could be good options, but there's a good chance they'll already get promotions before Carroll retires.
Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal floated a surprising name who could be Carroll's successor.
"If Carroll, who is on a three-year contract with a team option for a fourth year, gets the Raiders rolling and decides to retire, the name to watch is his son Brennan," Bonsignore wrote. "Brennan Carroll, 46, is the team’s offensive line coach. He was previously a college offensive coordinator at Arizona and Washington and experienced plenty of success.
"His time is coming. Don’t be surprised if he gets his shot with the Raiders if everything goes smoothly the next few years."
Brennan Carroll has been coaching for over two decades, but much of that has been under his father. The biggest concern with him is that he's never called plays on either side of the ball at the NFL level.
Perhaps he could be in line to replace Kelly if he gets another job in the next couple of years. It's hard to imagine him going from being an offensive line coach to a head coach once his father retires, but there are plenty of sons of long-time coaches who have had success.
Just ask Kyle Shanahan, Rex Ryan or the Harbaughs.
