Insider reveals what it could cost Giants to trade up for QB

The New England Patriots may shop the third overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft to a team interested in selecting a quarterback such as the New York Giants.

It appears New York general manager Joe Schoen had better fall in love with a signal-caller he knows will be available at selection No. 3 before he pulls the trigger on such a trade.

According to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network told reporters Thursday that the Giants may have to package the sixth overall pick this year along with three second-round selections in a trade to move up to No. 3. To compare, NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY said last week that the Giants would need to offer New England pick No. 6, a second-round choice and a noteworthy 2025 selection to jump up a few spots in the draft order.

"It’s a steep price to pay — a little bit of a premium there — but you can get up to No. 3 with the ammunition that they have," Jeremiah said about the Giants. Jeremiah added that such a deal could "be something very much in play," in part because Schoen knows he can escape the four-year contract current starting quarterback Daniel Jones signed in March 2023 as soon as after next season.

Most, if not all, draft experts believe the Chicago Bears will select USC Trojans star quarterback Caleb Williams first overall. ESPN's Field Yates and multiple CBS Sports analysts are among those who think LSU Tigers signal-caller Jayden Daniels will be the second player drafted this spring. That would leave North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye as the last of the advertised top-tier players at the position available at pick No. 3.

For what it's worth, CBS' Chris Trapasso has repeatedly predicted Maye could fall to the Giants at No. 6.

Jeremiah said it "feels like you are going to have the three quarterbacks go No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3" off the board. The Washington Commanders possess the rights to the second pick but, like New England, could listen to trade offers.

"Talking to people around the league, that seems to be the expectation. … [It] would be pretty nuts if four of the first five picks were quarterbacks, but I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility," Jeremiah reported.

It was previously said the Giants "are not ready to shut the door on" Jones as he recovers from the torn ACL he suffered in early November. Some also believe the club has too many roster holes to sacrifice multiple draft assets for any one player, but Jeremiah noted that the fact there "doesn’t seem to be as much excitement at this point in the process about next year’s" quarterbacks could cause a club like the Giants to trade up for either Daniels or Maye.
