Many people believe Steelers QB Kenny Pickett will take a leap in year two, but one insider thinks it's not necessarily up to him.
"Now, what's it gonna take for Kenny Pickett to have a breakout season? To me it's not so much Pickett, I don’t worry about him. It's the play-calling, it's Matt Canada, the OC, freeing guys up. They are super deep, they are super deep in pass targets, between their receivers and tight ends there are six guys who can catch the football," NFL insider Adam Caplan says. "I like their offense, Canada's just gotta get something going."
Caplan may be onto something as Pickett certainly looked the part during the second half of the season in 2022. Pickett led Pittsburgh 6-2 down the stretch, throwing for 1,442 yards, five touchdowns and just one interception.
The 2022 first-round pick also became the first rookie in NFL history to have a game-winning TD pass in the final minute in back-to-back games.
Pickett must still prove he can do it but the same goes for Canada.
The Steelers finished as the sixth-worst team in points per game (18.1) a season ago. For comparison, the Chiefs, who are the reigning Super Bowl champions, had over 10 more points per game than the Steelers last year, posting a league-best 29.2 points per game average.
Pittsburgh also ended the year with an unimpressive 322.6 yards per game average, the 10th worst in the league.
Both Pickett and Canada will need to improve for the Steelers to have a successful 2023 season, but if either of the two is on the hot seat, it's surely Canada.
