Insider suggests Jimmy Garoppolo will have more 'control' in Las Vegas

After the relationship between 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly soured, the QB flocked to Las Vegas, who will give him the keys to its offense.

"One thing that was interesting about talking to Jimmy is how excited he is to have control back," Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer told KRLV-FM in Las Vegas on Monday. "The quarterback controls everything ( in the offense of Raiders HC Josh McDaniels)."

Jimmy G's desire to move on from the 49ers system is a surprise because he succeeded in it. In five seasons as the 49ers starter, he had a 38-17 starting record and posted a 99.2 passer rating, the league's 10th best during that span.

Nonetheless, after throwing a game-sealing interception in a Week 3 loss to the Broncos, a clip of Garoppolo went viral. Per NBC Sports' Mike Florio, he appeared to diss Shanahan's play calling.

Shanahan said he "didn't watch the video" in a news conference shortly after the defeat, but it was apparent that tensions boiled.

According to The Athletic's Tim Kawakami, the relationship kept "going south," and San Francisco let Garoppolo walk in free agency.

Conversely, Garoppolo had a closer relationship while he played under the former New England OC for three seasons. McDaniels maintained the friendship even after New England traded him to San Francisco.

Garoppolo told Breer McDaniels sent him a text message, which said, "Good luck, pulling for you," before a 2021 divisional-round victory over the Packers. Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.5M contract with the Raiders nearly a year later.

The 31-year-old QB will have an opportunity to prove he's more than the product of the 49ers system. Las Vegas is a QB-friendly offense since it ranked ninth in passing TDs last season and has six-time Pro Bowl WR Davante Adams.
