It’s been four weeks since the New England Patriots benched 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones for 2022 fourth-rounder Bailey Zappe, and while his numbers haven’t been drastically better, there has been a noticeable difference in the offense’s performance.
Zappe won as many games in four starts (two) as Jones did in 11, and SI.com’s Albert Breer believes it might have something to do with the third-year QB wearing out his welcome with his Patriots teammates.
“The Patriots most certainly haven’t quit on Bill Belichick, but given the way Bailey Zappe has sparked the offense, it’s certainly fair to wonder whether the players had given up on Mac Jones,” Breer wrote. “Jones’ string of bleep-ups in games coincided with similar plays showing up in practice, and while Zappe’s no world-beater, the players at least know what to expect when he’s in there.”
Explosive pass plays as the #Patriots starters (20+ yards):
— Evan Lazar (@ezlazar) December 26, 2023
Bailey Zappe - 12 in 117 pass attempts (10.3%)
Mac Jones - 15 in 345 pass attempts (4.3%)
Although the Pats actually averaged more yards of total offense per game under Jones (293.4) than Zappe (263.7), the team has scored more points under Zappe (16.3 per game to 13.4).
Zappe is also averaging 204.3 passing yards per start to Jones’ 192.7 with more yards per completion (9.8 to 6.1), a higher passer rating (83.1 to 77), a higher touchdown percentage (3.8% to 2.9%) and a lower interception percentage (2.6% to 3.5%).
While there’s no concrete evidence the Patriots locker room quit on Jones, the numbers certainly paint an interesting picture.
