Insiders float surprise landing spot for Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick's list of potential landing spots for 2024 is quickly dwindling, as there are only two head-coaching openings remaining in the NFL. According to several insiders, however, a surprise team — the Kansas City Chiefs — could throw their hat in the ring for the legendary coach.

Despite interviewing twice with the Falcons, Belichick lost out on Atlanta's HC position to Los Angeles Rams DC Raheem Morris. The Los Angeles Chargers — another team he was linked to — landed Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, leaving the 71-year-old with few other options.

The Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders still have vacant HC positions, though there's been no indication Belichick is actively being considered for either role, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

With few job openings left for Belichick to fill, several NFL analysts have floated teams that could be interested in acquiring the longtime Patriots HC despite currently having a head coach under contract. A possible match that's been brought up more than once is the Chiefs.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid's future in the NFL is hardly a guarantee. Although he has two years remaining on his contract, the 65-year-old is the oldest active head coach in the NFL.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Kansas City isn't ruling out a scenario in which Reid retires after the postseason.

"There's reason for the Chiefs to believe that he could [retire]," Florio said on the "Rich Eisen Show." "The Chiefs are at least thinking, 'What will we do if he does?'"

Replacing Reid, the fourth-winningest coach in NFL history (258 wins), with Belichick, the third-winningest coach in the league (302), seems like an easy fix on paper.

"I don’t know that Belichick would be a fit there, but there’s only one Patrick Mahomes," Florio added. "And if I want to catch Brady and win a Super Bowl [like] he did when he left me, I’ll partner up with the guy that’s determined to catch Brady with seven total in a heartbeat."

Mahomes already has two Super Bowl wins under his belt, with the possibility of securing another this postseason. The Chiefs stand one win away from the penultimate game, but enter the AFC Championship Game as 3.5-point underdogs against the Baltimore Ravens.

ESPN's Adam Schefter speculates another Super Bowl victory might be enough to convince Reid to hang it up.

"If the Chiefs were to win the Super Bowl this year, could that, would that make him more likely to walk?" Schefter said Thursday on ESPN’s "Get Up." "And if he did walk, at that point in time and you’re the Kansas City Chiefs, and Bill Belichick were still sitting out there, would that not be an interesting possibility, if that’s what Andy Reid decided to do? To go take a run at arguably the greatest coach of all time and to replace one legend with another?"

A union between the Chiefs and Belichick is purely speculative at this point, but it is certainly something to keep an eye on.
