Recent whispers hinting that Kenny Pickett could become the odd man out in the competition for the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback job led some to wonder if 2025 third-round draft pick Dillon Gabriel or 2025 fifth-round choice Shedeur Sanders could win the gig.
Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand strongly suggested Monday that the only way Gabriel or Sanders will see in-game action before Cleveland's Week 9 bye is if disaster strikes the club.
"There is no rush to see what Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders can do," Grossi wrote. "They are under four-year contracts. They are developmental prospects. One may develop quicker than the other, but neither should be pressed to start so early in his rookie season. ...The Browns like Gabriel, but let’s see him perform against a live pass rush before making reservations for Canton."
During a Tuesday morning appearance on ESPN Cleveland, Grossi added that he thinks Sanders could spend "a lot of this season inactive on Sundays."

As of Monday, FanDuel Sportsbook continued to list veteran Joe Flacco as the betting favorite to win Cleveland's Week 1 starting job over Pickett. Interestingly, those odds were off the board late Tuesday morning.
Browns reporter Zac Jackson of The Athletic also noted that "there are probably two battles within the bigger competition this summer: Pickett versus Flacco to be the Week 1 starter, and then Gabriel versus Sanders, to an extent."
On the same day that it was learned that Tennessee Titans QB Will Levis would be undergoing season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, Grossi mentioned that he thinks the Browns could subtract Pickett from their unique quarterback situation "via a trade for a late-round draft pick." Pickett had current New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore as an offensive coordinator when the two were with the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
On Tuesday, FanDuel Sportsbook had rookie Tyler Shough as a massive -245 betting favorite to emerge as New Orleans' Week 1 QB1.
One thing that became apparent as veteran Browns players reported to training camp on Tuesday is that Sanders’ chances of starting Cleveland’s regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7 hinge entirely on Flacco, Pickett and Gabriel either struggling significantly during the preseason or being unavailable by the time Week 1 rolls around.
