Insights from New Los Angeles Chargers RB: Justin Herbert Protection, Coaching Staff, and Signing Decision
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Dan Wolkenstien and Jake Hefner of the LA Football Network and hosts of the Chargers Unleashed podcast were on hand at the Los Angeles Chargers facilities for Gus Edwards’ introductory press conference on Monday afternoon. The 6’1, 238 lbs running back shared his thoughts on several topics:

Protecting Justin Herbert

Edwards is taking his already pass-blocking duties very seriously. In Jim Harbaugh’s introductory press conference, the Chargers head coach emphasized protecting the quarterback as his first order of business.

This assignment won’t be anything new for the veteran heading into his seventh season. Last year with the Baltimore Ravens, Edwards allowed just three pressures all season and has allowed just one sack in his career.

Jim Harbaugh Offers Glimpses Into The 2024 Chargers Offense

Harbaugh also talked about beefing up the running game as an off-season priority. Edwards was the team’s first addition in free agency and the only addition to the RB room so far. Making Edwards the only back with meaningful playing experience in the Chargers backfield.

Coaching Staff And Decision To Join Los Angeles Chargers

I just thought it was a great opportunity, Edwards said when asked about joining the Chargers, the coaching staff that they’ve been putting together is incredible. I’m really familiar with coach [Greg] Roman and his game. I just want to be a part of it because I know what his mind set is and same with coach [Jim] Harbaugh. I know what his mind set is; being a physical team and i just wanted to be a part of that.

Edwards expanded on Harbaugh’s mindset;

I know his mentality. He wants to win. He’s been very into everything. He’s been in the meeting rooms with us. He hasn’t been staying away from the team. He’s been in the weight room with us. It’s been great to just see his face around.
