The Green Bay Packers is not satisfied with the performance of its wide receiver group last year. Yes, the talent is there with guys like Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, and Dontayvion Wicks, but they need high-end production and it didn't happen in 2024.
Therefore, general manager Brian Gutekunst will explore different avenues trying to find better alternatives. Last week, it was reported that the Packers are trying to acquire DK Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. On Sunday, the talk is that the team is also evaluating free agency options.
This is what ESPN's NFL insider Dan Graziano reported:
"The Packers -- who have been more aggressive free agent bidders in the Brian Gutekunst era than their reputation suggests -- could be spenders this month. They're looking to add a veteran wide receiver to their very young room. They'll be looking for upgrades on defense, too, especially considering they are listening to trade offers for cornerback Jaire Alexander. And they'll have to find a way to replace center Josh Myers if he leaves in free agency."
With Tee Higgins franchise tagged by the Cincinnati Bengals and Chris Godwin negotiating a new deal to stay with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the open market won't be as robust. But there are still some intriguing players, like Kansas City Chiefs' Marquise Brown, former Packer Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Jacksonville Jaguars' DJ Chark. Darius Slayton from the New York Giants is 28, but could also be a good value.
One specific option, Los Angeles Chargers' Joshua Palmer, is expected to generate interest around the league.
"He's a buzzworthy name among some teams as a sleeper receiver," reported ESPN's insider Jeremy Fowler.
The problem with free agency is that it doesn't offer the high-end potential the Packers truly need, even though there are players who could be useful contributors. If Gutekunst wants a real wide receiver one, the draft and the trade market will be more realistic avenues. Beyond DK Metcalf, Brandon Aiyuk could eventually be a trade option.
At this exact moment, the Packers' 90-man roster has Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, and Malik Heath at the wide receiver position. Bo Melton is an exclusive-rights free agent and should get back too, but Watson is hurt and will miss the start of the regular season. The team has also signed future deals with Julian Hicks and Cornelius Johnson, who spent most of last season on the practice squad, and Tulu Griffin, who played for the Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns as an undrafted rookie.
