Irvin Speaks Out with Emotional Take On 'New Direction'

The offseason just got a whole lot more interesting for the Dallas Cowboys with a new head coach added to the do-to list.

With Mike McCarthy out, the search for his successor will now begin, and a list of candidates has already been made.

But was it the right decision to move on from McCarthy after five years that didn't move the needle?

Cowboys legend Michael Irvin thinks so.

“I've always said it was time, and I'm joking around saying I'm jumping for joy, it's about the new direction," Irvin said on FS1's Speak. "Because I never want to jump for joy because we talk about it, coach, our man loses his job. I'm just happy for the new direction and the new energy that'll go into the new direction.”

But this head coaching job isn't for everyone, and as we know, the Cowboys are run a little differently than most other NFL teams.

With so many "distractions" around the franchise with all the media tours, and our own Mike Fisher talking about "53 Brands," in which players all want a piece of the marketing pie when they see what Jerry Jones can do.

It all adds up to an organization that doesn't make "the main thing, the main thing," and for Irvin, whoever is the next coach, that must change.

“I've been jumping on this thing about the focus that it takes to win championships, that requires great focus, and that's exactly what the Cowboys have lacked, great focus,” the always-emotional Irvin added. “Then we can bring up all these other things and call them a distraction because you lack great focus so that's what the Cowboys need to get back to, a coach that brings great focus to this team.”

So the winds of change have arrived in Dallas, and time will tell if Jerry wants to keep moving forward with the same approach that has netted the franchise nothing in nearly three decades, or if he will try something different.

But it's clear that Irvin knows what must be done.
