Is Cam Miller the Raiders’ Secret Weapon or Just Beginner’s Luck?
Imagn Images

Okay, Raiders fans, let’s talk about the quarterback everyone suddenly can’t stop buzzing about: Cam Miller. Yeah, the sixth-round draft pick that most of us didn’t even blink at in the 2025 NFL Draft. But guess what? The rookie might just be the guy worth a double take. And Tom freakin’ Brady thinks so too. That’s right, the GOAT himself gave Miller an unofficial thumbs-up during draft talks. Not a bad start, eh?

A 41-Yard Bomb to Make You Look Twice

Picture this. First NFL drive. First pass. Boom! A 41-yard touchdown straight to Shedrick Jackson. Oh, and he did it with the kind of confidence that makes you ask, “Wait, this guy’s a rookie?” Miller went on to finish 6-of-7 for 76 yards and, of course, that oh-so-sweet touchdown. Obviously, Raiders Twitter was freaking out. But before we start building his statue outside Allegiant Stadium, that blocked kick at the end left the preseason opener in a tie (because #RaidersLuck).

Still, you gotta admit it, not too shabby for a guy who came in as QB3 on the depth chart behind Geno Smith and Aidan O’Connell. That performance stunned enough people to kick-start debates on whether Miller could, you know, actually go somewhere.

The Tom Brady Seal of Approval

Speaking of going places, here’s where things get even juicier. Raiders’ minority owner and resident legend, Tom Brady, was reportedly on board with drafting Miller. Yep, the best quarterback to grace the gridiron, thought Cam in round six was a smart play.

Miller reacted to this pretty humbly, calling it “honoring” and “very humbling.” But admit it, if Brady were in your corner, you’d probably go around wearing a cape. An endorsement from the GOAT definitely earns some locker-room street cred for Miller. Now, it’s all about proving the old guy (uh, respectfully) right.

What’s the Buzz? A Look at the Numbers

Now, in case you want to pull stats into the chat, Miller’s college record at North Dakota State screams “I’ve been here before.” He started 56 games, racked up 11,998 yards of total offense (yep, you read that right), and won two national championships. Oh, and he legit rewrote NDSU’s record books. This isn’t a “whoops, I had a lucky game” situation. The guy can ball.

He’s clearly got poise and an eye for touch throws at all three levels. But, there are those questions. You know the ones. Arm strength? Meh. Can he read zone defenses quickly enough? TBD. Will he crumble under the pressure—which he quite literally did in college at times? Haters will bring it up.

From Rookie to Raiders Buzz

Miller’s performance has Raiders fans calling for more snaps in the upcoming preseason games. And here’s the thing about him being QB3 right now—that spot isn’t nailed down in concrete. O’Connell is solid, but not lock-the-door solid. If Miller keeps making smart, confident choices on the field, he might nudge his way up the depth chart.

But big picture? The Raiders aren’t expecting Miller to be the guy—not yet, at least. What they are looking for is a reliable future backup who could maybe surprise us when the stakes get high. A win-win for any team trying to cover its bases QB-wise.

The Bottom Line

Does one solid preseason performance mean Cam Miller’s the next big thing? Not really. But hey, it does make him a better story than most sixth-round quarterbacks. Brady’s endorsement doesn’t hurt, because it means maybe Miller’s got some traits we just haven’t seen full throttle yet.

For now, let’s keep the expectations realistic, can we? He’s a long-shot rookie who has to fight his way past more experienced players. But if his preseason debut tells us one thing, it’s that Cam Miller isn’t someone you brush off. Whether he becomes “that guy” or just a fun preseason what-if, he’s got our attention. And hey, Raiders fans, “fun” isn’t something you’ve exactly had in abundance lately, so enjoy the ride while it lasts.
