Is De’Von Achane the Dolphins’ Best Offensive Player?
The Miami Dolphins have found a (perhaps unlikely) savior in recent weeks in running back De’Von Achane, whose ability to pick up yardage as a dual-threat has almost single-handedly revived what was a sputtering offense. With injuries devastating the roster, the Dolphins have pivoted to a run-heavy modus operandi on offense, and Achane has been the head of the snake.
In consecutive Dolphins wins, Achane has been nearly unstoppable. First, he torched the dreaded Buffalo Bills in Week 10, as he tallied 174 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns while adding 51 receiving yards for 225 scrimmage yards. That’s the fourth-highest yardage total of any player this season.
He followed that stellar showing with 120 rushing yards and 45 receiving yards in the overtime victory over the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Achane spearheaded Miami’s game-winning drive in the extra period as well.
Through 11 games, Achane has been Miami’s top rushing threat by leaps and bounds with 900 rushing yards in total. Only two running backs in all of football — Jonathan Taylor and James Cook III — have more rushing yards to their name at this point, but what makes him truly a unique talent is his knack for being a dual-threat. He has accounted for roughly 36 percent of the Dolphins’ scrimmage yards, the third-highest rate in the league.
This shift to a ground-and-pound approach — with Achane leading the way — suits head coach Mike McDaniel’s squad like a glove. It protects a battered O-line and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa while letting Achane show off his quickness. Achane has been the focal point of Miami’s offensive attack as of late, as he’s even outshone wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
At this moment, Achane seems to be the Dolphins’ most dangerous weapon, and he’s doing his part to keep their playoff hopes alive. Hopefully, his dynamic offensive talent will carry Miami to plenty more wins following its bye.
