Is it time to give up on Luke Musgrave?

Expectations for Luke Musgrave were pretty high when he was drafted in 2023.

After a fast start that saw him on track to shatter the rookie tight end record, it looked like the Packers made the right choice.

But then the injuries started piling up on Musgrave.

A lacerated kidney injury sidelined him for the most of the remaining 2023 season.

Since then it has been fellow draft class tight end Tucker Kraft that has taken over.

Kraft has been everything that they had hoped Musgrave would be.

There was some optimism that Musgrave would be able to develop more after 2023.

But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

After another injury filled season in 2024, Musgrave got another opportunity to be the Packers starting tight end.

This time is was Kraft, who was put on injured reserve with a torn ACL.

But Musgrave failed to do anything with that opportunity, raising questions about the tight end heading into his 4th year.

But is it too early to call Musgrave a wasted draft pick or a bust?

A better question would be, is it too early to give up on Musgrave?

Why Musgrave deserves another chance

Luke Musgrave has had his struggles.

Futhurmore more he is now heading into year four but still hasn’t developed to what the Packers wanted at tight end.

But given more of an opportunity, along with Kraft, the two could be lethal at TE.

I wrote an article about a year ago about how having two tight ends who could stretch the field could help the Packers.

Musgrave still has the receiving abilities to make defenses respect it.

If anything Musgrave could just be a good number 2 tight end.

He did put up good enough numbers last year as the 2nd tight end on the depth chart.

24 receptions for 252 yards.

Even though he wasn’t able to reach the end zone, the numbers are still respectable for a number 2 tight end.

He also gives Jordan Love another passing option in the passing game.

Given the relationship he has with Love, he is the best option behind Josh Whyle.

Giving Musgrave a second chance would show the Packers still have faith that Musgrave can still be a threat in the passing game.

It’s time to move on

While the Packers could very well keep Musgrave on the roster, there are more reasons why the Packers should move on.

Musgrave has had multiple opportunities to prove himself.

But he hasn’t made the most out of those opportunities.

Yes, the numbers put up last year is good enough for a back-up tight end.

But that is not what the Packers were looking for when Kraft went out for the season.

Not only was Musgrave not able to replicate what Kraft provided the offense, he struggled.

Musgrave failed to reach the endzone and given key situations he wasn’t able to produce the results.

Furthermore, Josh Whyle could very easily be the number 2 tight end for a cheaper price than Musgrave.

This will probably be a decision the Packers will have to face once training camp or even next offseason starts.

Conclusion

For now, it seems like the Packers are willing to give Luke Musgrave another opportunity.

But for Musgrave, he must take advantage of that opportunity starting in training camp.

If Musgrave doesn’t make the most out of this opportunity, his time in Green Bay maybe even shorter than expected.
