With the New York Jets, Justin Fields might be on his last opportunity to show that he deserves to be an NFL starter.
In a similar way to Baker Mayfield signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there were skeptics over what Mayfield could do. But a change in scenery and a franchise that believed in him had flipped Baker's career.
Can that be the same with Fields in New York? Absolutely.
But it all starts at practice in the offseason, and Fields has at least one friendly face with his former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson riding shotgun.
More than that, though, Fields already has the confidence of the coaching staff, having been named the starter before training camp begins.
And he seems determined to make the most of what might be his last chance at a starting job.
"Now, he's a really good athlete," head coach Aaron Glenn said. "He works his butt off in the weight room. He's another guy that he's doing everything he can to improve and whatever advantage he can get from coaching, strength and conditioning, being on the field, he's going to get that.
"He's going to take that advantage and he's going to run with it, so I'm very happy with where he's at and I'm very happy with actually all the quarterbacks that we have in this program right now and I know they're going to push each other to be better."
That's a good first step for Fields. Get the attention of the coaching staff.
Yes, he's the starter right now, but we know how fickle the NFL can be, and it doesn't take much to make a player be taken down a peg or two.
But Fields, in what is now his third team in five years, has a clean-ish path forward in 2025 and now must walk through the door that the Jets have opened for him.
Both Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey have been glowing in their praise for Fields, the player and person, now it's time to show it on the grass.
Yes, it's early, but Fields is doing all the right things in what might be his last chance to show he's a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL.
