Here we are, as training camp has begun in Oxnard for the Dallas Cowboys, and instead of Day 1 being filled with hope and positivity, the dark cloud that is the Micah Parsons contract saga is blocking out the sun.
Considering talks have been going on for months, it would be easy to think that there has been some progress between Dallas and Micah's representatives, right?
Well, not exactly. As Parsons fronted the media, he is still unsure of when/if a deal will get done.
"I don't know, we'll see how long things take," Parsons said.
Micah was then asked if he's discouraged that it's taken this long.
"Honestly, yeah, when you look around the league seeing other teams taking care of their best guys, you see a lot of people around the league getting taken care of, you wish you had that same type of energy," Parsons said.
"I feel like I'm the best at what I do," Parsons said. "You can argue whoever, but stats, numbers don't lie. The consistency is there, and the availability is there."
Granted, we aren't in the inner workings of the financial side of this, but the Cowboys know what the going rate is - this is going to be a $40 million APY (or more) deal that makes Micah the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history - and the fact that the longer they wait, the more expensive it becomes, makes the franchise's stance odd.
Micah stated he doesn't understand why it is taking so long, and neither do we.
Other teams have no problem taking care of their star players, and if Dallas does, we ask this simple, yet pointed question: What more does the franchise want/need to see from Parsons?
The production on the field is there, and his leadership qualities have been on show all offseason.
The longer this goes, the uglier the momentum that comes with it. Luckily, there is an easy solution, and one that should have been done a month or so ago.
Pick up the phone and thrash out a deal. It is that simple.
