Chris Perkins, sports columnist for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, recently wrote an article titled “It Would be Crazy for Dolphins to Bring Back Tua”, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this subject.
Interviews with the Miami Dolphins’ new head coach, Jeff Hafley, and their new offensive coordinator, Bobby Slowik, indicate they have had very positive conversations with Tua Tagovailoa.
Some people may interpret these comments as an indication that Tua will stay with the Dolphins and compete for the starting quarterback position.
Now, only the coaches and the general manager, Jon-Eric Sullivan, can make that decision, and it remains a possibility until we learn otherwise.
That being said, my interpretation of the comments is that they are attempting to be politically correct and not damage the possibility, however remote, of a potential trade.
Yet, when Tua said after the season that “it would be dope” to have a fresh start with another team, he was basically saying his goodbyes.
Don’t let the door hit you on the backside on your way out.
A trade is not happening, in my opinion.
Let’s not forget Tua’s numerous limitations: his injury-prone history, limited mobility, weak arm strength that is getting weaker each year, and inability to win in the cold, just to name a few.
Not to mention his prohibitive 212 million dollar contract.
So, if I were a member of the Dolphins’ top brass, I would be shining a light as bright as possible on Tua and hope that some team out there is sufficiently blinded by it to consider a trade.
I don’t see that happening.
Teams are smart enough to know that after June 1st, the Dolphins will likely cut him and absorb a 67 million dollar hit on the 2026 salary cap as well as a 32 million dollar hit in 2027.
No trade necessary.
The Dolphins’ former general manager, Chris Grier, and former head coach, Mike McDaniel, created this mess, and the current leadership inherited it.
And the search for a QB1 will begin yet again.
